Hi jxself, I find your response interesting. So, you're saying the concept
of 'cloud computing' is fundamentally incompatible with free software,
because we don't have control of software that is running on another
person's computer?
I find the FSFE graphic to be
If its a network of your own computers then a cloud is it not? I have been
looking at OwnCloud. It seems like a self hosted cloud, potentially more user
friendly way of syncing files accross all of your computers. Is this an
incorrect assessment?
There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers ;P This is one of the few open
membership forums for people wanting to use only free code software, so these
kinds of questions often come up here. In some ways I think it would be
better if there was a separate forum for discussion of free code
"Is there a cloud service like that available?"
There is no cloud, only other people's computers. :) Think on that and
rephrase the question into "Is there someone else's computer I can use?" :)
I assume what you're looking for is a file sync/ backup service. There is an
ownCloud client in the Trisquel repositories, which can be used with an
openmailbox.org account.
I don't think its a dumb question. This thread is helpful to me.
Thank you all for the helpful information. I should have done some more
research before asking a dumb question. I will be more careful next time.
I would like to use something like Dropbox with trisquel. Is there a cloud
service like that available?

i been thinking that untill i notice it not peer to peer!
As a syncthing user, I can heartily recommend syncthing.
It used to be a bit unstable, but lately it has worked like a charm for me.
@Cleiton- im seriously looking into the spideroak folks cause of their Zero
Knowledge idea for right now and get rid of that stupid dropbox.
what do you need it for?
if its nothing private i could host some files for you on my server
Go OwnCloud :)

im going to but i need this fast and deployed now so that why i didnt metion
owncloud
Well, you can try an OwnCloud server, or a Tahoe-LAFS server.
The links below refer to the software, not the service:

If you want to know why I didn't discuss much about service, take a look

ok guys im currently looking for an cloud storage like dropbox but more
private. i got three choice - spideroak or seafile or syncthing.
You can use any cloud service you want, but I strongly recommend use
encryption to privacy and keep safe your files.
to encrypt:
$ gpg -c filename
$ * put password *
to decrypt:
$ gpg filename.gpg
$ * put password *
dont forget the password!
Sparkelshare uses Mono, so it's a non-no.
I had no idea that the client software of Ubuntu One was fully free software!
I'll give it a try.
Do you want something that doesn't need the other computer to be powered
on in order to sync?
Yes, that's what I'm after, which seems to rule out ownCloud and BitTorrent
Sync (which wasn't ever an option because it's closed source. I think it
also rules out rsync, version control such as

Use a DVCS repo on a portable disk? I use a USB flash drive to store
Mercurial bundles of changes that I do to my private repos (todo list,
browser bookmarks). Bundles can store changes that aren't included in
another repo or all changes, I had two repos of which one had exactly

What about https://owncloud.com/registration; ?
It is a server using the owncloud.org system:

Thanks, I'll have a look at this solution!
I could probably use GIT for this? I mention GIT because it's the only DVCS
I have a little experience with.
Another possibility is leastauthority.com which is endorsed by Richard
Stallman, the FSF, and Jacob Applebaum of the Tor project. Unfortunately, the
main service is very pricey right now, but hopefully their Magic Folder (A
Dropbox clone) will be much more affordable when it finally arrives.
CLOUD WILL NEVER BE SAFE!
Take a look at git-annex and git-annex assitant.

I understand that
The client of ubuntu one is free software, so why not give it a try?
The server side software is proprietary, but this shouldn't bother you since
you don't want to set up your own server and it's not important which kind of
software is running on canonicals server because you can't trust them
A problem with your description is the concept of server, I think. ownCloud
could run on one of the machines you that you want be involved in the syncing
for example. Does installing a package make the machine magically become a
server? It's just a software that any machine could run
There is no more privacy respecting or less privacy respecting
cloudservice provider since we can't look inside their servers and shouldn't
trust them anyway.
You can use such a service without problems if you
1. encrypt every file you're uploading
2. make sure that you can use this service
if anyone is looking for freedom compatable, single-board computers, check

3. Have redundancy, i.e. copies on multiple services, they can pull the plug
any time, see Megaupload.

This has nothing to do with Trisquel itself, but i am looking for a free
cloudservice. A good one, so with respect for the customer, the privacy etc.
Any suggestions ?
