The packaged version in Belenos is Xfce4 4.10 only. To upgrade, you have a few choices: go with Flidas Alpha (don't know if it's packaged yet) or use a PPA, use Debian 9 Xfce or.. something else like wait until it's there. http://packages.trisquel.info/belenos/xfce4

Nope, no error obvious error messages when it crashes. It just completely freezes. Even CTRL-ALT-F1 does nothing. Is there a particular log I should look in for error messages, after I boot back up again?

I remember when I ordered a book in pdf format, it has DRM. So i could open it only with Adobe's reader, limited times. I found a python script that removes that DRM from you pdf, and yes I could open my bought pdf times I wanted with any pdf reader.
