This is just plain sad, that is why Captialism has become such an object of
horror for me.

as for disney, screw them and every other corporation that wants copyright to
get more powerful.

What we really need is copyright to be reduced to 35 years or less and have
no backdoors to add more time, aka bribes to keep it going longer than 35
years.

That would be my thought, although maybe 20 is more reasonable... without
spyware built in of course! :)

Package libdvd-pkg does not contain any libraries. It's an installer that
uses wget to download the source code, then compiles the source code. It uses
Videolan's repositories. It makes the process somewhat easier as there is no
need to add any third party repositories.

Can such FOSS packages be put in an external repository immune to US and EU
regulations? E.g. a closer cooperation between Trisquel and Uruk could be
beneficial in this regard for both parties. Uruk and Trisquel can make use of
each other's repositories.

This strategy had been successfully employed in the past, when export of
certain cypto packages were forbidden by the US government - affected
packages were simply served from non-US based repositories.

The installer asks if the user wants to get automated updates. I guess it
won’t work if manually installed. But the bigger question that boggles my
mind: why not include this package in Trisquel? Unfree or encumbered?

Ah.

I'd much rather use the APT repository to install it from. Then I'll get
updates.

"...assume you mean libdvdread4..."

No, I mean libdvd-pkg. That's the latest way to get the libdvdcss and other
stuff. It's been that way since Ubuntu 15.04 I guess.

It's an installer. It takes care of the rest. Easy as pie.

Trisquel has never provided libdvdcss itself. There is an easy way to install
it though because the VideoLAN people have their own repo:

"I can’t find libdvd-pkg"

I assume you mean libdvdread4, and not libdvd-pkg. Because libdvdread4 does
exist.

That would already be absurd. Unfortunately it is even more complicated than
that. Works published after 1923 are copyrighted in the US regardless of when
the author died. For example, Kafka died in 1924, almost 100 years ago. With
life + 70, all of his works would be public domain. If works *written* before
1923 were public domain than almost all of his works will be public domain.
However, because much of his work was *published* posthumously (around 1925
IIRC), it is has a publication date later than 1923 and is still under
copyright.

Interesting, but yeah, whether or not it is illegal, in usa,
I don't support america's copyright laws because they are absolutely absurd.

70 years + life of the author...

seriously, could america be anymore corporate? Or corpse for that matter...

Because corporations, contrary to right wing belief, are dead inside...

No, VLC would only show the title menu and then quietly exit. Mpc won't play
either (mpv dvd://).

Libdvd-pkg must be fetched and configured to get the libraries. I downloaded
the package from Ubuntu Packages.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libdvd-pkg

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Then both VLC and mpv will happily play anything thrown at them.

Would VLC do the job?

I know vlc has some support for that.
