Same thing for syndicated “The Weakest Link”. I was also a standby guy but
I got a flight to LA and two nights hotel in the deal. I was just as
interested in the “how it gets made” part of the process so a day at NBC in
Burbank watching it all was fine with me.

It's not so much the call time itself as it is the fact that the call time is
so early because 1) there are 100 contestants, and 2) they're taking a full day
to produce one hour's worth of game show.
