There seems to be so much contestants have to pay attention to during the game

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Answer: “Yes, he is.” The Question: “Is Ronan Farrow Too Good to Be True?”

2020-05-19 Thread PGage
Reason #9 why it is important to follow good journalistic practices:
Sleazeballs like Matt Lauer will use lapses to try to rehabilitate
themselves.

The main benefit from reading Laura’s piece (which I strongly warn against
unless you are able to shower soon after; it’s like sitting under a drunk
who just wants to vomit all over you) is that it underlines how good an
actor Steve Carell is. That Apple TV show was problematic, but Carell
really captures the clueless, desperate, defensive self-blindness
manifested by Lauer here.

It should go without saying, but I will note here for the record, that
Lauer was not fired because of reporting by Ronan Farrow. Lauer’s friends,
and people who made a lot of money off him, fired him after talking
directly to the woman who reported his misconduct, and conducting their own
investigation, revealing a pattern of sexual misconduct.

Lauer uses the Smith piece in the NYT to imply his own mistake was simply
having consensual sex with a work colleague, and all other reports of
misconduct are just bad journalism. But other journalists reported a long
history of sexual misconduct, including the NYT. Whether or not Lauer is
guilty of the crime of rape that night in Sochi, and of every specific
piece of bad behavior he has ever been accused of, is a more complicated
question. But I think it is well established by now that he did a hell of a
lot more than just have a consensual sexual affair with a co-worker.

Just one example: Lauer makes a meal here of whether his assistant ever
took a woman to a nurse after an encounter in his office. He accuses Farrow
of not fact checking this with his assistant, and claims if he had, the
assistant would have said She never took anyone to a nurse. Whatever. This
is like being accused of murdering someone in a supermarket and then
stealing an apple, and spending all your time showing how you would never
steal an apple. Here is what the NYT wrote soon after Lauer was fired:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/29/business/media/nbc-matt-lauer.html?referringSource=articleShare

“One complaint came from a former employee who said Mr. Lauer had summoned
her to his office in 2001, locked the door and sexually assaulted her. She
provided her account to The New York Times but declined to let her name be
used.

She told The Times that she passed out and had to be taken to a nurse. She
said that she felt helpless because she didn’t want to lose her job, and
that she didn’t report the encounter at the time because she felt ashamed...

The woman said Mr. Lauer asked her to unbutton her blouse, which she did.
She said the anchor then stepped out from behind his desk, pulled down her
pants, bent her over a chair and had intercourse with her. At some point,
she said, she passed out with her pants pulled halfway down. She woke up on
the floor of his office, and Mr. Lauer had his assistant take her to a
nurse.”

Okay, so maybe the person who carried the title “Assistant to Matt Lauer”
is not the one who actually took her to the nurse. That detail changes
nothing.

Lauer also enjoys showing that the claim that he had a button he could push
to close and lock his door has been debunked. I review this here only
because it illustrates his creepy, sophistic style of argument. He did have
a button that closed his door, it appears it did lock the door from the
outside, but did not lock the door from the inside, which some stories may
have implied (see the full button story in:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2018/05/11/just-how-did-matt-lauers-famous-desk-button-work
)

That last is not completely irrelevant, but if the allegation is that the
most powerful man in the building ordered a female subordinate to strip and
have sex with him after pushing a button that automatically shut and locked
his office door, the defense that “well, she could have left the room if
she wanted to” is not exactly exculpatory.

Matt Lauer was a creepy, habitual sexual predator who deserved to be fired
and the public humiliation that followed. That fact makes it more, not
less, important that reporting about him, and alleged related episodes
(like Farrow’s claim that Weinstein blackmailed NBC into shutting down
Farrow’s story with a threat to out Lauer) be solid, rather than shoddy.

Much of the first season involved a villain who could use some comic-book
plastic surgery to give someone a new face undetectably.

Problem solved, aside from having to come up with an explanation for why Kate
Kane/Batwoman underwent the procedure off-screen. And why she apparently had
her whole body done, including (most likely) being shorter or taller.

Don’t let Fox hear you say that. Then they’d kick themselves for not simply
purchasing the original version of “Filthy Rich” (TVNZ 2; 34 episodes) instead
– after investing in Kiwi-to-American subtitles and a bit of FCC-based cleanup.

Congratulations!  Great on screen presence and rapport with Alex.

I will be watching again tonight.

Coincidentally I recently read something about Articles of Confederation.

I have been using Ancestry and other historical resources that

are available on line now while things are closed to do some

genealogy research.  I was reading some diaries that were

published in the 19th century from my famous ancestor who

signed the Articles where he wrote about their adoption by Congress.

First, it wasn't meant as criticism, and if it came across that way, I'm
sorry. Somebody was going to be the first to mention the result; I just
didn't want it to be me.

I'm reasonably sure that I'm not the only one who records Jeopardy! every
day. When there are places to go and things to do, they can stack up. And
even when it's just watching later in the evening of broadcast, seeing
relatively harmless tweets about questions from that night's show can be a
bit frustrating. So I'm not clear on what the appropriate space is; I
appreciate that everyone here is trying to do the respectful thing. And,
yes, having a list member on the show is a special case.

(For sporting events, on the other hand, if they're important enough to
record, I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm extremely unlikely to be
able to avoid exposure to the result.)

New Zealand has studios and experience producing film and TV. And New
Zealand is Covid19 free. Why not fly the talent to NZ, quarantine them for
two weeks, then start production over there?

Congratulations Ben, not just on the result, but on the entire way you carried
yourself during an exciting game. You were fun and easy going in a very
stressful situation. I think you missed two DD (not to rub that in) but you
kept your cool and your charm and your head in the game. When you got the
penultimate question wrong and dropped below her mid point, I was really
bummed, and could not do the math quickly enough to figure out if you could
still get within sticking distance with that one, minimum question left. When
you got it and the score showed you just barely made it, like many others I
thought we might be in for the tie.

But I agree with you that her decision was not necessarily a bad one. American
history is a strong point of mine, and if I were in her position a I think I
would have bet on that category, knowing I would have time to think about it,
rather than take a flyer on an unknown category that also is a reaction time
challenge. The real surprise to me was not that she bet, but that she got what
really was a relatively easy FJ answer wrong, when she was such a strong player
throughout the game. It looked to me that she was in one of those situations
that you were with the caviar question - where she probably knew the answer but
just had a situational brain lock.

And let’s not forget to be impressed by Ben’s handicap. I think I have played
once in my life with someone who had a handicap under 15, and the level of
intimidation and demoralization was as if I had been playing against Tiger
Woods. A 12 handicapper is always a threat to get a par on any hole, and gets a
few birdies every round. I play with guys who literally treat every 6 like we
got a par 4, and a true par is a Rae and precious event.

Good luck this evening (I know whatever it is has already happened to you, but
still, you know...)

Megan really had a tough decision on her wager; on the one hand, if she’s

And as to what I said to her afterward, I wish I could tell you, but I really

magazine rack for long enough to leaf through an issue.

Snark aside, there was a syndicated Page Six show recently that didn't make
it to a second year. And with social media celebrities don't need the
gatekeepers of traditional media to connect with fans. From what I've seen
of traditional media coverage, it mostly copies their online posts. I won't

I'm pretty sure I giggled out loud at the end of the show yesterday.

I really enjoyed your performance, Ben.

Just in case two...

Congratulations Ben! I echo all the previous comments. Very impressive.
And I was once again reminded why I would never make it on Jeopardy - the
fact that I, a former theatre critic, couldn't remember who wrote Angels in
America. :)
Keep it going.

Just in case...

Congratulations Ben, not just on the result, but on the entire way you
carried yourself during an exciting game. You were fun and easy going in a
very stressful situation. I think you missed two DD (not to rub that in)
but you kept your cool and your charm and your head in the game. When you
got the penultimate question wrong and dropped below her mid point, I was
really bummed, and could not do the math quickly enough to figure out if
you could still get within sticking distance with that one, minimum
question left. When you got it and the score showed you just barely made
it, like many others I thought we might be in for the tie.

But I agree with you that her decision was not necessarily a bad one.
American history is a strong point of mine, and if I were in her position a
I think I would have bet on that category, knowing I would have time to
think about it, rather than take a flyer on an unknown category that also
is a reaction time challenge. The real surprise to me was not that she bet,
but that she got what really was a relatively easy FJ answer wrong, when
she was such a strong player throughout the game. It looked to me that she
was in one of those situations that you were with the caviar question -
where she probably knew the answer but just had a situational brain lock.

And let’s not forget to be impressed by Ben’s handicap. I think I have
played once in my life with someone who had a handicap under 15, and the
level of intimidation and demoralization was as if I had been playing
against Tiger Woods. A 12 handicapper is always a threat to get a par on
any hole, and gets a few birdies every round. I play with guys who
literally treat every 6 like we got a par 4, and a true par is a Rae and
precious event.

Good luck this evening (I know whatever it is has already happened to you,
but still, you know...)

When Ken lost his 75th, they had Nancy Zerg on an iso cam and were able to cut
to her reaction when Ken’s response was revealed. I really wish they had the
same for me when Alex said that about Megan, ‘cause I’d love to see the look on
my own face. In the diary of notes I wrote after getting back to the hotel,
all I wrote was that Alex said “Megan's not looking happy" and all I could
think was “Wait, what?!?”

Megan really had a tough decision on her wager; on the one hand, if she’s
confident in “America in the 1700’s”, play for the win, and if not, maybe play
for the tie. I don’t envy her for having to make that decision. If our roles
had been reversed, you would have seen a tiebreaker; I wouldn’t have wagered a
penny on that category if I didn’t have to.

And as to what I said to her afterward, I wish I could tell you, but I really
honestly don’t remember. Obviously there’s more than a little bit running
through your head at that moment...

2020-05-19 Thread Doug Fields
I don’t think anybody was asking anything more than just wait until everybody
in the group, across multiple time zones, had had a chance to watch live. It
sounds like you’re confusing the “no spoiler” requests with a request that you
don’t spoil “Jeopardy!” in general for us. I personally couldn’t care less if
you announce the winners every day as soon as you see them…this was a one-time
request for a unique situation: we (well, *I* anyway) didn’t want to know the
results of his particular match in advance.

And, now that we get at least one more day of his run, I would repeat the
request for no spoilers until late tonight. 

My argument is simple: daily game shows, by their nature, are more suited to
the rules that would apply to a sporting event (albeit one that's not carried
live everywhere) than a scripted television program. Therefore, while it's
respectful to not spoil the ending in a situation where parts of the country
have not seen the episode, given that there's another episode airing 24 hours
later (and that the title of this thread was reasonably clear that how he
performed was the topic), I'm not sure how long you'd want to wait (or adding
spoiler space) before we could talk about it.
