[TV orNotTV] Re: Stewart Not on 'TDS' Tonight

2024-05-07 Thread Marti Lawrence
I enjoy Jon Stewart as host much more than any of the other people who do
that job, so I have been recording only the episodes he hosts.
I appreciate the update, and will adjust the DVR , removing the Monday
episode and adding the Thursday one.
Thank you.

I also wanted to like this version, being a big fan of the original.
I found it difficult to care about any of the characters though - maybe it
just wasn't geared for someone as old as me, but I was sad that it just
didn't click with me, and after the first season, decided to drop it.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Maher Down for Two More Years at HBO

2024-03-17 Thread Marti Lawrence
I appreciate your courteous response, and value your opinion. I am grateful
to live in an era where many programing options are available.

It concerns me how few people are willing to be exposed to ideas they
disagree with. I am glad you are.

It is also discouraging how so many choose to oversimplify issues as
Right/Left, Good/Evil, Christian/Everything else is the work of the devil.
Hardly anything in life is black and white, but so few are wiling to even
listen to, much less consider, anything that fall outside of their narrow
viewpoint.

I still enjoy his show. I don't agree with all of his positions, but I find
his discussions to be interesting, even if he or his guests make me angry.
I am frustrated that so many people have put themselves in a media cage,
and don't listen to anything they don't already agree with.
I want the media to challenge me, and to offer opposing viewpoints. I want
to hear what the fringes of both sides have to say, if for no other reason
than it serves the same purpose as spy intelligence, to let me know what is

Re: [TV orNotTV] Amazon Prime Starting Ads on Jan. 29

2024-02-04 Thread Marti Lawrence
We have been streaming some older programs on Prime, and sadly, they have
the ads roughly halfway through. Sometimes it was only 30 seconds, but
then it got to where it said, "Ad 1 of 2" and there was a countdown clock
showing how many seconds were left of the minute or so of commercials.
We found it distracting enough to grudgingly pay the extra money for
ad-free.

The playoff game here in Kansas City is going on as scheduled this evening,
despite the snow and record cold temperatures expected during game time.
We don't have much accumulation though, and the stadium has been preparing
by adding "warming stations" throughout the interior and parking lot of
Arrowhead.

We enjoyed Big Bang Theory, and are fond of Young Sheldon, although I think
it is time to end it, as Sheldon is becoming annoying. The peripheral
family characters are OK as a part of the whole, but I don't see them
carrying a sitcom. I don't dislike them, I just don't think they are
interesting enough to be leads.
I could be way wrong though.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Quickie Review: Frasier reboot

2023-10-15 Thread Marti Lawrence
We watched both episodes, and it needs some work on timing, but we enjoyed
it enough to watch a few more and see if it finds its footing.
There was a touching moment at the end of the first episode, the only
appearance by any of the original cast other than Kelsey Grammer.

I didn't include the link because I found the words I heard when I

She now claims that her remarks were sarcasm, but frankly, I don't think
she is a good enough actress to say those horrible things with a straight
face, without her actually holding those views.

Here is an article that discusses her recent outburst, plus references her
past remarks, and includes a link to the podcast where she claimed the
Holocaust didn't happen. You are free to listen to it and see if you think
her words were spoken in jest. I should have included a link in my
original post, to verify the statement, and to allow you fine folks to make
up your own minds about whether to listen to it or not.

Being a big fan of Bob Odenkirk, I will give the new show a try, but I wish
they hadn't chosen a character name that was used in Breaking Bad/Better
Call Saul.
I associate "Hank" with DEA officer, Hank Schrader.

I read that the show will be updated to present day, but I am assuming that

It’s a new series on Peacock from Rian Johnson starring Natasha Lyonne.
It’s a throwback to crime drama series from decades ago like Columbo and
The Rockford Files. As usual it’s tough to get a good reading from the
pilot because there’s so much exposition to set up the characters. It
 seems
a good enough idea in the genre and as they’re releasing an episode a week
that seems about the right frequency to watch. I wouldn’t bother binging
 the series.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Quickie Review: Julia

2022-06-10 Thread Marti Lawrence
I agree that the inclusion of a black woman in a position of power in that
time period is unrealistic. I suspect you are correct, that this fictional
character was written in so the cast wasn't all white. In reality, the crew
at the TV station probably didn't include any African Americans. I
enjoyed Brittany Bradford's portrayal of Alice Naman, and I wasn't
disturbed by the fabrication, but I admit I did a search to see if she was
an actual person, because it seemed so unrealistic. I can see how in
telling the story of a real-life person, stretching artistic license to
invent a character could bother some viewers.

I enjoyed the series tremendously, but I am a sucker for period pieces with
gorgeous fashions, automobiles, and set décor. I also thought the actor
who portrayed Mr. Rogers did a fantastic job of capturing his unique speech
pattern and demeanor, even though he was only on screen for a few minutes.

I guess I am old and out of the loop, because the comment about
out-Sorkinned Sorkin has me complexly confused. I appreciate this
conversation, so if that comment could be explained, I would sure be
grateful.

one or two per night. We just finished *Breads* the sixth episode, and
while the sexist portrayal of men may feel exaggerated, I lived through
those times, and misogyny was the norm. I had bosses who felt like groping
any female employee was their right, stealing our good ideas and claiming
them as their own was acceptable, and advancing less qualified men over
women was not an issue. I think the men in *Julia *are being portrayed as
“seeing the light” as in her boss Russ realizing what a treasure Alice is,
or Julia’s husband Paul, coming to understand the sacrifices she made to
follow him wherever his diplomatic career took them. I can appreciate your
point of view though, and enjoy reading the comments on this site very much.

2022-04-09 Thread Marti Lawrence
Better Call Saul has been a remarkable show, and can well stand on its own
merits, but I do think it would be a delightful bonus to see Walt and Jesse
for a bit, since that was the way we met Saul Goodman in *Breaking Bad*,
was through their characters.

[TV orNotTV] Re: For those wondering about the final season of "...Saul"

2022-02-12 Thread Marti Lawrence
I am sad to see it end, but eager to see how they wrap up the storylines,
especially since we have seen bits of Saul's future in the black and white
segments that begin each new season.
The seven-episode Part 1 of “Better Call Saul” Season 6 will premiere on
April 18 at 9 p.m. ET. on AMC and AMC Plus. Back-to-back episodes will air
that night. Once that first half of the final season has run its course,
Part 2 won’t be too far behind, as the final six episodes of “Better Call
Saul” will begin rolling out on July 11.

So does this mean the guy in the Members Only jacket was a hitman and he
killed Tony in front of his family?
That was always how I interpreted the final scene, but there were some good

I enjoyed his performances on SNL, but I am not sure he has the "star

I have a lot of doubts about this, even though I was very fond of the
original. John Mahoney passed away in 2018, and Martin's interactions with
his stuffy sons was a big part of the comedy.

I don't think any of the other cast members have signed on to the project,
so there would be no Niles, Daphne, Roz, or the staff from the radio
station.

A truly groundbreaking program, and so subtle in exposing ingrained

Ha! As soon as I saw Trump's dance, I told husband all it needed was the

I continue to be baffled by the musical choices on his rally stops - lots
of Village People *(YMCA, Macho Man) *and for some unknown reason,
Fortunate Son, an anthem to poor young men who were unable to dodge the
draft during the Vietnam era. Sample of lyrics below for anyone unfamiliar
with the song.

*Some folks are born, silver spoon in handLord, don't they help themselves,

[TV orNotTV] Re: SNL Fail

2020-10-19 Thread Marti Lawrence
I don't care for Jim Carrey's portrayal of Biden. Carrey has a manic
energy that works in a lot of his roles, but it is all wrong for Biden.

Jason Sudeikis did a great Biden, I wish they would bring him back.

I saw a notice that Adele is the host next week. But she is not listed as
the musical guest, so I don't know if we'll get to hear her sing.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Special Report during Evening News

2020-10-06 Thread Marti Lawrence
The ABC evening news was the same. David Muir had started speaking
following the standard opening, then he said there was a special report,
and they had a different graphic that said "Special Report" and was
followed by the reporting and footage of the President leaving Walter Reed
Medical Center, video of the helicopter flying to the White House, and his
arrival and walk up the stairs, then him removing his mask, and the speech
he gave.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Judge Judy 25

2020-10-02 Thread Marti Lawrence
We occasionally catch People's Court, and this season has gone full
virtual, with Judge Milian appearing on a video monitor from her bench, and
monitors set up at the podiums labeled Plaintiff and Defendant, with those
participants also only being there on the screens. The courtroom has no
audience. Harvey Levin still provides commentary, but in a remote
location, with no crowd gathered around him for him to get responses from.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Jason Bateman gets LA La Landed

2020-09-21 Thread Marti Lawrence
I thought the whole program came off fairly well. The technical aspects of
doing so many remote locations and delivering the actual statuette to
people in far-flung places worked pretty well. I know the jokes are always
a little flat, but I don't expect to get a lot of laughs from people
introducing categories at awards shows.

I agree the memorials were tasteful and I only saw a few people online
grumbling about someone being omitted. I always get emotional to see the
group of talented people we lost.

As a longtime fan of Schitt's Creek, I was thrilled to see them sweep the
comedy category and break a record.

Leaning in hard on diversity seemed to be a theme, but I didn't feel like
anyone who won was selected purely because they represented a minority.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Ratings: "Yellowstone" finale tops all scripted series this year

2020-08-25 Thread Marti Lawrence
It's kind of like "Dallas" with cattle. Kevin Costner stars as wealthy
patriarch John Dutton. He is head of a dysfunctional family and ended up
in the season finale with a cliffhanger whose tagline is, "Who Shot J.D.?"

It is set in Montana and the geography is gorgeous, the action scenes are
well-done (rodeos, cattle wranglers) and there is a lot of tense drama.

The "power bowl" is low calorie and quite delicious. They recently built a
Taco Bell in our small town, so we wanted to try it. I was looking at the
menu for something a little healthier so I gave it a shot. It is only
about 600 calories and very filling, with a nice assortment of meat, grain,
vegetables, and dairy.
