You certainly looked fine. I can only echo what everybody else here has
said. Congratulations on your run, and thank you for a certainly
entertaining week, both on the box and on the list, and hopefully the trip
to the Proms works out next year.

Admittedly, this information is ancient, as I haven't been on a game show
in more than 25 years, but what I was told then (or the time before? 40
years) was that the prizes were held until the show actually aired --
because if the show *didn't* air, they could rescind the prizes. But as
long as at least one market saw it, it happened. (And some of the
"consolation" prizes started arriving right away, so, so much for that.)

I never did hear a reason for why the check takes so long, but I don’t think
it’s to keep us from gabbing spoilers in advance. I would imagine it has
something to do with bureaucracy and paperwork and yadda.

The job definitely helped a lot. As part of my broadcasting major, I had to
take at least one class in performance, and I’ve been around the business for
almost a quarter of a century now, so while I wouldn’t say I’m an expert, I’d
say I’m certainly comfortable. Apologies again if I’ve told this story here
before, but my dad and step-mom came out to see the taping, and my dad was
worried I’d be nervous. No matter how many times I told him I’d be okay, he
kept telling me I should go out to our news set and sit in front of the cameras
with the lights on, just to get used to being under the lights. After the
taping was done, he told me that the moment he heard me respond “What is
Canada, eh?!”, he knew he’d been wrong and that I was perfectly fine.

Congratulations, Ben, on living the dream and doing it delightfully.
Watching you win was thrilling. And even when you fell short, you were
still incredibly engaging, and it made for compelling TV. (I know that's
not very comforting, but still!)

I didn’t realize they don’t pay until after the episodes show; I would have
assumed they gave you a check on your way out the door. Is that to enforce
your silence until air time?

We have talked a bit before about how Alex can be a bit of a dick at times,
but he clearly liked you. Why not, you were likable, but I think in
particular you had the talent of being comfortable and verbal, without
threatening his control or the time limits of any interaction. I imagine
Alex really doesn’t like contestants who are either so nervous they hardly
talk, or so loquacious they take over. Do you think your job helped prepare
you to comfortably occupy the short windows for talking on television, or
is that just your personality (I suspect I would be weirdly and obnoxiously
both too cryptically nervous and too controllingly Over-talking).

Congratulations again on a very successful, entertaining and engaging run.
Your three games explored almost the full range of the Jeopardy experience,
as Alex kind of foreshadowed in his introduction last night. To win a good
chunk of change, show off your J-Skills and schmooze with Alex is a dream
come true I’m sure, and well deserved.

Now I can't help but wonder about this theoretical situation: someone who works
for a local TV station is on as a contestant at the end of the season, and
carries over to next season as the returning champion. For the new season, the
station they work for starts carrying "Jeopardy!". What do the producers do?

(I suspect that's not actually going to come up, since they should know the
affiliate contract situation well in advance. In fact, that may have been
something they checked while you were waiting.)

Re: [TV orNotTV] Ben On Jeopardy!

2020-05-20 Thread Ben Scripps
When they called me, I actually had a two-part phone call; after I confirmed my
station isn’t a J! affiliate, the contestant coordinator said she still needed
to run it past her boss to make sure I was good. So I got the call, then had
to sit on that information for about four hours waiting to hear if I’d be
approved or shot down.

We haven’t promoted on-air at my station at all; the station that carries it in
my market is an NBC affil, and there isn’t really anything on NBC I watch, so I
haven’t seen if they’ve done anything local. I know they ran the promo Sony
produced which featured me heavily, but I haven’t heard anything directly from
them. I did do a radio interview with my old friend from college (we’re both
game show nerds), the local paper did a front-page story on me (small town
America…), but that’s it so far. I’ve watched each episode at work with the
few co-workers in the building and on a Zoom meeting with much of the remaining
staff at home. (BTW, here’s the video from Final on night #1:
http://www.benscripps.com/transfer/reax.mp4
 )

As for the $1,042—the thousand part was ‘cause I had some wiggle room for
wagering and didn’t want to be one of those people who wagers nothing. The $42
was a pure call-out to “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.

I can answer this part based on the paperwork I've filled out every time I've
tried out for the show -- if he worked for a station that aired "Jeopardy!", he
would have been ineligible.

Sorry I don't have Wednesday's episode to share with the list, but I had some
apparent reception problems that are causing my DVR software to not be able to
export a complete file.

I have a couple non-spoiler questions (as we approach 11:00 in the East):
-Does your station air “Jeopardy!”? If not, how has your station – as well as
the other station – been promoting your appearance?
-What was the significance of the $1,042 wager last night in Final?

There’s a delay between your last episode’s air date and when you actually get
the check, so getting the finances sorted for a trip this year was never really
in the cards.

But that’s the nice thing about the Proms; they seem to be able to survive and
thrive from year to year…:-)

I've never been to The Last Night of the Proms, but I have been to other
Proms and they're always good fun.

I fear that the Last Night... trip will have to wait until at least 2021.
The BBC may not have confirmed it yet, but there's no way the Proms will be
going ahead in their usual guise.

But great fun watching - and cheers Jim, once again, for sharing.

I worked in captioning back in the Analog Era, and I know things are different
here in the Digital Era -- I suspect the caption files are distributed to local
stations separately from the program files, and your local station got confused
about which was which. (I just checked, and "Jeopardy!" had the correct
captions on the broadcast here in L.A.)

To be *abundantly* clear: there was *never* an intent to post *anything*
about the content of the episode prior to 11:00 PM ET/8:00 PM PT. Since
here in Chicago it airs at 3:30, I tuned in at 3:27 only to see Governor
Pritzker's face and thought "Oh, you've gotta be *kidding* me! I'm gonna
miss this!". Then he wrapped up and Channel 7 joined the episode literally
just as the returning champion was being introduced. This made me very
happy.
