I'm a longstanding supporter of the '78 as well mostly because my dream
westy is a '78 Champagne as I love the color, the one year interior dash,

Well, others have covered the mechanical advantages, but mine is not just
mechanical, it is emotional as well. My first bus was a '78 passenger. I
drove it from 39K miles to 205K miles. Across the US twice
Guess I was thinking of the heater box flange shapes matching 72-74 instead
of one year only exhaust pieces. And luckily I don't live in CA I don't have
to worry about the correct exhaust for my year :)

79 is essentially identical but has a one of
78 is the first loaf with hydraulic lifters and the last year with the
common exhaust parts. If I am correct, the 79 has a one-year exhaust
setup. So, it's the last loaf worth getting before they switched body
styles and exhaust parts.
