Does anyone know if IBM has a list of possible causes of damaged files?
We have a 13gb type 18 file that is damaged, and we don't know why.

Can anyone suggest a company that provides Unidata training, besides
IBM? I have tried to get training several times through IBM but they
keep canceling the class due to low attendance.
Any books that can be recommended would be helpful also.
Thank You

What's the error message? What commands get you the error (analyze.file
doesn't, so it's not completely hosed).
Generally, a broken file occurs when one of two things occur (these are just
the most frequent; there are other ways): a write to overflow (and you got
overflow!) begins, writes the

How do you know the file is damaged? Are you getting an error message,
and if so, what is it? There are quite a few different ways that files
can be damaged, most of which result from hardware events occurring
while the file is being written to.

We got write errors from a UniVerse program that updates that file.
These errors were repeated many times:
Found buffer on freechain that is marked as in use.
Possible file corruption can be fixed with RESIZE.
I do not know if these are UniVerse or Unix errors. The program was not

Hi,
We are having problems with our spooler which have only recently started
occurring for reasons at this stage unknown.
What I get in the err.log file is the following:

Look in the spool directory for the lock file and delete it.
Something like var/spool/uv/lock.my-printer
Turn off the use of lock files in the device admin program, reRead config
with locks off and then it should be ok.

This is more like a marking question. I go through the introductions of
Universe and Undiata in IBM WebSite. I still have no idea about the
difference of these two products execept they are both multivaleue
databases. Could anyone give a better explanation about the fundamental
difference bewteen
That's an interesting one - don't see that too much. When buffers are
freed up and released from the overflow chain of a group they are linked
into a chain of free pages that are available within the file. Then
when a group needs to add a new overflow buffer it can obtain one, if
available, from
UniData is like Clan of the Cave Bears

Oh, dear! UniData and UniVerse each come with multiple flavors, and each
combination of database and flavor has its ardent (sorry, I could not
resist!) fans and people who just as fervently despise it.

1. The IBM tech manuals are good.
2. For programming in UniBasic, the book by Malcolm Bull, The Pick

The first biggest difference (in my opinion) is in the internal storage of
data. UniData stores all the keys for a group of records together, with
pointers to the data records within each group. UniVerse stores key+record
key+record key+record... in a linked list.
The second biggest
More information, I have been working with Unidata for more than 5 years. I
saw some people here discussed whether Undiata supports Unicode
(international characaters) or not and someone mentioned Universe acatually
supports Unicode. This got my interest to check the difference bewteen

Judging from your web page at oasolutions.com, you are not familiar in any
detail with any of the multivalue family of databases of which Universe and
Unidata are members.
If you are, then it may be worth noting that Universe supports file
