Thanks guys - I am on the beta program for the U2 soap server - however
architecturaly i kind of want to go direct from php to unidata (since they
are on the same linux box) and not go through the U2 soap server, tho down
the line it may well be the better solution.

Just a couple of thoughts:
1. AFAIR there is a module in PHP that can instantiate Java classes - I
remember JayJay did an article on using PHP with RedBack that exposed
RedBack Objects through Java. You might be able to do something similar
using UOJ if you haven't got RedBack.
