Re: [U2] New U2 BDT

2012-03-10 Thread David Jordan
Bill

Eclipse is a pain, but at the moment it provides a base that works for windows
and linux offerings. It is a standard base for Rocket tools including datavu,
webservices, restful servives, EDA, etc.

I support David's comments that rather than putting down products, we need to
work with Rocket in how to improve the products. There are many opportunities
for test tools and other development tools to be integrated with BDT that could
help developers productivity. However Rocket will not invest in this product
if we constantly put it down.

It is also something as developers should look at how they manage source code.
Maybe the source code that is to be edited should be taken out of a library
and stored in a development spot which would have a local directory.

Whilst there is still work to go on BDT, it is an evolving product and
something that makes U2 look more professional something that the community has
had to battle with in the eyes of management and consultants

David Jordan

Thanks, Doug.

Not much of a tool, especially when you have to download and install all the
junk that goes with it! :-(

Hi Bill:

After testing BDT, I'm wrong. BDT does recognize environment variables.
However, you cannot open or edit any files that are not "DIR" files. So
you are trying to edit an LD file and it does not let you.

I figured this out when our editor allowed editing of those files. So
there really is not a bug but a BDT feature.

Re: [U2] New U2 BDT

2012-03-10 Thread David Wolverton
You should at least raise a case to Rocket about this -- they fix problems
based on issues from customers --But to my knowledge, they NEVER address
'forum based' issues as they don't have an 'eCase number'!

Once you've raised the case and gotten an eCase number, post that
information so that other similarly situated can ALSO log a case and refer
to YOUR eCase -- the more people that have the same issue, the sooner and
more likely it gets addressed. People trying, giving up and then skulking
back into darkness has the side effect of leaving the issue broken with
Rocket possibly not aware of the impact of the break-- Unreported issues do
not help raise the quality level...

I've never felt that U2 ignored issues that rendered the product 'unusable'
- those are usually pretty high up the list -- especially a high-profile
tool like BDT -- they've been trumpeting that thing. NOW -- they may
'document' the shortcoming -- but at that point, it becomes the 'omission of
a feature -- not a bug' Heheh

SO, for the good of humanity (at least, the U2 subset of humanity) -- log
this as an issue before you move back to WED -- and everyone else similarly
situated, do the same.

(off box... back to work)

Thanks Doug.

Just another product that forces me to dance to their tune rather than
letting me work in the most efficient manner that 20 years of experience has
taught me. Yes, they're much smarter and better than me.

But then, my daughter informs me just how stupid I am on a daily basis! :-)

So, I guess WED is my editor of choice. After all the crap I'm forced to
download and install, one would think simple editing functions would work.
I guess not. [sigh]

Re: [U2] Calling U2UG Members

2012-03-10 Thread George Land
As a board member for the past four years and one who is standing for Vice
President I will respond.

The user group is for all the members of the U2 community whether they are
Rocket employees, end users, ISVs, consultants, Distributors or anyone else.
The user group has a number of principles or aims but, to be honest, it is
not really fulfilling any of them very well currently and that needs to
change.

A major problem is lack of resource, the board meet for an hour every other
week, everyone is busy, things take a long time to happen and that needs to
be addressed. I believe that it can only change by working with other
organisations in the U2 space whether that be Rocket, Distributors, ISVs or
whoever else.

The group needs to find a role that is complementary to the other parts of
the community but not beholden to any one of them, including Rocket, but our
aims are the same, we are all interested in the success of U2.

Rocket are supportive of U2UG but aside from this list, which technically is
not part of the user group, and the website there is little to support and
that needs to change.

I feel that the most powerful role the group can take is to facilitate a
community not just for the exchange of technical information but also for
commercial details. For example how many people really understand the case
to be put forwards commercially and technically to support the use of U2?
We need to work with the people who have that information and get it into
the community. The provision of information on where to find things like
training and consultancy, information on who uses U2 and what they use it
for, these are all things that I believe that the U2 community would benefit
from but to unlock that we need to work with the people who have the
information.

It is hard because I'm not sure many people think about what they want from
the group, to a certain extent the board needs to lead by action and see
what take up we get. Any ideas on what people think the group should do
would be very welcome.

I hope people will vote and obviously I hope they will vote for me! But
whoever you vote for please be free with your comments on the direction the
group should take, with a new President in David Jordan we have an
opportunity to review the direction and I'm sure I speak for the whole of
the board when I say that we would welcome any comment or debate on what
that direction should be.

George Land

(And apologies if you get this twice, my first sending of it seems not to
have made it)
