Does anyone know a good headhunter for the NJ/NY area? I have lot's of

Re: [U2] Unix mail server?

2009-06-25 Thread Burwell, Ed
Here's a high-level view of what I'm envisioning:

1. Our Unidata application sends an email to the outside world, giving
the recipient certain options.
2. The recipient hits REPLY, types a few characters and hits SEND.
3. Our rs/6000 receives the email and put it somewhere.
4. Our Unidata application could periodically check that somewhere for
received mail and do whatever with it.

Thanks for your responses so far.

In short, yes, however, the first question should be: what are you
planning to do with the mail you receive? I wouldn't recommend using
your application server as a mail server, since to do that, you'd have
to expose it, at least to some degree, to the outside world.

Howdy all!

We're doing a proof of concept where we're connecting a serial scanner
to a wireless termserver and we want to get the input from the scanner
into our U2-based software.

We've got the tty defined and we can open the port. The stickler is in
writing a routine (in BASIC preferably, but unix script would be okay
too) that will monitor the open tty and input any data whenever
something is scanned at the scanner.

Has anyone done anything similar that could point me in a direction?

Thanks!!

Brian

RE: [U2] [UV] Editing Subsequent Value Marks

2008-08-13 Thread Burwell, Ed
If it's Unidata, then do EV (Edit Values) and that will put you in a vertical
editor of those values, then you can go to the one you want to remove and do a
DE (Delete line) then FI (File Item) and it will return you to the level you
where at. You may want to play with this on a test item till you get the hang
of it.

I have what looks like ^253^253 that needs to be just ^253.

Without luck I have tried...

1: C/^253^253/^253

and

1: C\^253^253\^253

Suggestions would be appreciated.

[U2] Embed Dynamic Connect in a Browser

2008-03-12 Thread Burwell, Ed
A department here is purchasing a web-based application from XYZ company. The
users need access to our UD app and don't want to switch back and forth. XYZ
is willing to embed a Dynamic Connect window into their app (for a fee, of

It looks like the wIntegrate API can do this?

If anyone has done this with Dynamic Connect, then we won't need to purchase

However, this brings up a good practice thing to note. The seperator
must not be 'enterable'. So that makes INPUT a bad idea. If you want
to try out an alternative, I just put
http://www.pickwiki.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?action=editid=GetKey up on the
wiki. My problem was that the Asus eeePC does not seem to be a proper
xterm, so I reproduced most of the functionality of QM's keycode()

What unidata version?

What SELECT .. BY statement were you using.

Are the BY fields actually stored in the file, or are they I-types that
tran to another file?

Hello,

I have been getting corrupt data lately. Stuff like this:

sort: warning: first character of the record is '\0' discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!
sort: warning: the record contain '\0' character, discard it!

Are there any programming no-no's that could cause stuff like this, for
instance:

1. Putting logic in an UPDATE trigger that calls a UniData function that
run a UniQuery statement that creates XML, then writes that XML to a
file (to be HTTP transmitted later by a separate background task).

2. Putting logic in an UPDATE trigger that compares the prior record to
the one about to be written, then updates a log file if the records are
different.

3. Four separate indexes on a file.

I'm getting desperate. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks.

more issues:

guide -U0 filename is now giving me this:

GUIDE_ERRORS.LIS:

Group 11350, block 11351, record number 12 = 970953

RE: [U2] [UD] Possible causes of corrupt data on a UniData static file

2007-11-02 Thread Burwell, Ed
Can UniData TRIGGERS be problematic?

In the past, I wrote a trigger that would launch a UniData function that would
(eventually) generate XML with a UniQuery statement, then POST the XML using
submitRequest to a secure site, take the XML that was returned in the
RESPONSE.DATA parameter and write it somewhere - all before finishing the
original trigger that called this stuff. That never caused corruption. Am I
near any limits or anything that you are aware of?

Are there any known issues with UPDATE triggers that write to records that have
UPDATE triggers?

Thanks.

[U2] Cordless Barcode Scanner for a WYSE-55

2007-10-10 Thread Burwell, Ed
We have been using the Symbol LS3070's for years and it's time to start
replacing them.

When we originally tried the 3070's we found that the serial interface was far
faster than the keyboard interface. Now they tell me that keyboard interfaces
in general are much faster.

The ONLY new equipment out there, that I can find, that looks to be friendly
with the WYSE-55 is the PowerScan 7000BT
http://www.scanning.datalogic.com/html/ps7000bt.htm This uses a keyboard
interface.

Does anyone out there have any experience or advice they can share?

(Replacing the WYSE-55's with PC's in not an option at this time...)

Thanks.

I've found some stuff in the following for UniData version 7:

Administering UniData on UNIX (see Appendix A)
Using UniData (contains a little stuff on NULL values)
Using UniAdmin (describes the values even though is assumes you are using some
GUI tool)

If you're using a pass-through slave function, there are two possibilities
I've seen for solutions:

1. Your emulation is 'converting' the escape to its ASCII equivalent. If
so, there is usually a setting for that.
2. Try using CRT instead of PRINT.

Hi All,

Does anyone know how to send a control code to a printer connected as a
slave? I have tried to send the escape sequence but it is not being
interpreted by the printer, just printed out.

Change HP printer to landscape.

Using print CHAR(27): l1O

[U2] [UD] Union Query

2007-05-16 Thread Burwell, Ed
Has anyone developed or know of a way to do the equivalent of a UNION query in
UniData? I have 2 files, one is a daily file and the other is a monthly file.
At night the daily records get moved into the monthly file and the daily file
gets cleared. At month-end, the monthly data gets moved into a history file
and the monthly file gets cleared. You know the drill. Both files are
structured identically and share the same dictionary. I would love to do
something like:

SORT DAILY.FILE AND MONTHLY.FILE WITH DATE = 5/1 BY DATE DATE PART.NUMBER
DESCRIPTION BIN TOTAL QTY

I stared writing a program called UNION.SORT that I would use instead of SORT.
Parsing the Uniquery statement started to get hairy (and I don't have that much
time to devote to this) so I put it down. If REFORMAT or SREFORMAT had a way
to move the entire record into the new file instead of just the dicts listed,
I'd be home free. I also don't want to re-write our application to populate
the monthly file at the same time we populate our daily file (then just clear
the daily file at night).

Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

RE: [U2] [UD] Union Query

2007-05-16 Thread Burwell, Ed
Amen David. My only interest in this is to do SORTs and LISTs. I haven't even
thought about the SELECT and READNEXT thing.

Question for everyone then: Should IBM invent a method to extend the Query
languages of UniData/UniVerse to do this 'Temporal File' - a Cross Data
File SELECT/LIST/SORT?

That is, should the logic for handling multiple datafiles with a common
dictionary basis be 'native' to the processes? Would we gain significantly
from this?

If so, this should go to the Better n' Better group and U2AskUs...

Have to contemplate how it would work though - essentially, they would have
to have back TWO elements on 'READNEXT' - the datakey and the file But
I could see TREMENDOUS use on some new fuctionality here...

I'm with you, Charles. We face this all the time, since
Prelude's ADS splits data into open and history files.
Merging lists is all well and good, but I still have to
retrieve data from two separate files. I always wind up
writing Basic to do it, making independent selects from each
file and writing the keys to a work file with a tag
 indicating where the data resides.

[U2] [UD] Dynamic variable

2007-04-06 Thread Burwell, Ed
Just discovered something kinda cool that I want to share:

Here are a set of equates:

COM.DEFS TEST.FILE
001:DIM TEF(2)
002: *
003:EQU TEF.VAL TO TEF(1)
004:EQU TEF.TOTAL.VAL TO SUM(TEF.VAL)
005: *

And here is a little test program:

0001: *
0002: INCLUDE COM.DEFS TEST.FILE
0003: 10 MAT TEF=
0004: FOR I=1 TO 5
0005:TEF.VAL1,I=RND(20)
0006:PRINT VALUE :I: = :TEF.VAL1,IR#2
0007: NEXT I
0008: PRINT
0009: PRINT TOTAL = :TEF.TOTAL.VALR#3
0010: PRINT SUM= :SUM(TEF.VAL)R#3
0011: PRINT STR(-,78)
0012: PRINT RETURN to do it again or 'E'xit : ; INPUT B,1
0013: IF UPCASE(B)=E THEN STOP ELSE GO 10
0014: END

When you run this, the variable TEF.TOTAL.VAL always knows the sum of the
values in TEF.VAL!!

Also, if you try to do this in a program:

TEF.TOTAL.VAL=0

It won't compile!! It knows!!

Very cool (I think).

Ed
