[U2] Resurrecting a crashed session

2013-06-12 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Hello all,

We use Unidata 6.1, connecting to it over telnet, sometimes the programme that
is connecting by telnet crashes leaving the unidata session running but
disconnected from the now crashed programme. Is there a way to attach to that
orphaned session thereby not loosing the work done during that session?

Re: [U2] Date conversion..

2013-03-22 Thread Jonathan Leckie
I always use :

OCONV(DATE(),'DDMY,A,Z4')

In data that is going to a spreadsheet, it means Excel knows it is a date and
stops Excel changing the format to American (we are based in the U.K.).

help me in printing it as a date.

BTW I'm using OCONV to write the value to the column.

[U2] Huge Dynamic Unidata file

2012-04-25 Thread Jonathan Leckie
I have a very large file that I don't have enough free space to memresize,
however howabout I create new dynamic (temporary) file and then copy all the
records (in ECL) to the new file and then (unix) copy the temporary file over
the top of the original.

Does that seem like a sensible idea?

[U2] LANG=C in Unidata 6.1 (Linux)

2011-11-15 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Having the locale set as LANG=C causes some weirdness in a linux command that

unpredictable results, such as the UniBasic UPCASE and DOWNCASE commands, and
the MCU and MCL conversion codes. but has anyone experienced any problems

Perhaps a more normal LANG=en_GB ? It is to remove a problem with date
formatting, so just something that would make the date european would work.

Don't know too much about it, but, I have not heard of any MV system
supporting UTF-8 yet.
So I would hesitate, to change that setting if I were you. I've heard of
vendors working on the issue, but, thats about it.

[U2] Stapling a unix print job

2008-05-20 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Not directly related to U2 but perhaps someone has experience of this. I have
large print run that we would like to staple in sections (varying numbers of
pages per section, possibly different numbers of sections per run). Can this
be done without too much trouble from a UNIBASIC programme using PCL codes?
Can anyone recommend a printer with which they have had success?

The print run programme calls a series of report writer reports that print the
data, though I can get them to output to a text file on the server if required.

 Yes,

 use FIBCDFN in AE

You can set up additional options which are used for SE via /GC.PARAMS

From TCL you can use NEWPCODE as a stand alone verb (Unidata)

[U2] Combining report writer reports

2007-08-10 Thread Jonathan Leckie
I have some report writer reports that are called from the programe that
creates the data that the reports use, however I would like to consolodate
these in to one print job and send that at the end, I cannot output to one
dummy printer (a file on the server) as that would mean only one person
using the programme at a time. I have tried experimenting with the
Additional Report Parameters (/MP process, F5, F9), the spooler options
look as though they may be useful but I cant get the HS option to work as I
expect, Is there a way to get the _HOLD_ file name created and concatenate
that to another file, then do the same with the next etc, etc. Or is there
an easier way to combine the output of separate report writer reports?

CN : Yes, far, far too wordy a phrase.
IM : And too accurate! I need something dynamic, but vague, something that
people wont know how to pronounce when they see it written.

CN : Let me think ... how about, ititize? Like dramatize but with I.T.?
IM : Brilliant!
CN : And the beauty part is you get ititization or itism for free!

[U2] Getting current SETPTR values

2007-08-10 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Is there a way to get the values reported by SETPTR, especially the
destination without parsing the results of the ECL command? I have noticed
that the format of the output of the SETPTR command is not consistant,
making parsing difficult.

[U2] Converting static to dynamic

2007-07-24 Thread Jonathan Leckie
We have two very large files from which I often have to remove data to stop
the files reaching the 2GB limit, much as I enjoy removing this data my
colleague has suggested that changing these files to be dynamic would mean
we could allow them to hold more data and choose when to remove old data
rather than be forced to.

Does any one have any experiences that they wish to share regarding changing
files in this way, e.g. file performance before and after, any practical
steps required after conversion etc.?

We are running red hat enterprise Linux 3 and unidata 6.

[U2] wIntegrate character scalling

2007-06-12 Thread Jonathan Leckie

Is it possible to configure wIntegrate so that text and graphic characters
(lines and boxes etc.) occupy the whole window in a resolution more than
1024 pixels wide?

At the comment we (using IBSfont) can maximise the window but get a big
black border round the terminal session display or switch to Courier new and
text and graphic characters go wonky.

[U2] too many constants near line ...

2006-08-11 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Any ideas how to stop this, without refactoring a *very* big programme, it
seems to be complaining about the number of strings we have defined,
commenting out a sufficient number seems to solve it. I am hoping there is
a setting that can be set to change the number of constants allowed in a
programme?

[U2] Focus Software

2005-03-18 Thread Jonathan Leckie
'Lo All,
Does anyone have experience using this software, especially on version 6.1
of Unidata, with views on how much of an improvement it is over the existing
(as I understand it) ability to use IDE in VB.

[U2] Uniobjects automation error

2005-01-17 Thread Jonathan Leckie
I'm trying to develop a small application using UniObjects with Visual Basic
6.0. Program is running on Windows XP connecting to a UniData database
across a TCP/IP connection.

I can run the program inside Visual Basic IDE and the program runs fine but
when the program is compiled I get an automation error:

Run-time error '-2147417848 (80010108):
Automation error
The object invoked has disconnected from its clients
Anyone know why this is and how it can be fixed. I have never seen this
type of problem before.

[U2] [UD] Accumulate lots of small jobs into one large one

2004-06-14 Thread Jonathan Leckie
Hello all,

We have recently purchased a shiny new fast laser printer to print our
factory paperwork, however the nature of our reports is negating the benefit
of the fast printer, it takes 4 seconds for the printer to do the first
page, however we send lots of different individual report writer reports,
this means that often the printer is just waiting four seconds between the
end of printing one small report and starting another. Is there a nice
Unidata based way of accumulating all the jobs into one then sending it? Or
perhaps a less nice Unix (HP-UX) way of appending all the print jobs to one
file and sending that?
