Hi Glenn:

I have changed our XLr8Editor today to lock UniBasic code while you edit.
You will never get this kind of response from any of the other developer you
mentioned below or Rocket Software for a feature you got to have. Are you
going to put money where you mouth is and buy XLr8Editor for $49.00?

 Hi Doug,

 The BDT certainly seems like the basis of what could become an excellent
tool, however, I am not willing to edit programs without locking in place,
and as far as I can tell the BDT does not lock the program for editing,
which is asking for trouble.

 I find a mixture of ED and mvDeveloper provide me with the ammunition I
need, although I am also enjoying playing with Accuterm and WED at present.

RE: [U2] Dynamic Array oddity very useful

2008-08-19 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Dennis

On UniVerse the output is:

ZZZ]XXX]DEF]XYZ

Which makes more sense, since the A0 insert the value at the beginning

After each step the result of A is as follows:

A='DEF'  DEF
A2='XYZ'   DEF]XYZ
A0='XXX'   XXX]DEF]XYZ
A0='ZZZ'   ZZZ]XXX]DEF]XYZ

Louie
Ps. Maybe there was a typo in the result given by jBase

Way back I was most impressed by the use of X=NOT(X) as a means of doing a
toggle. Now I've found another wonder...

Over on the jBase forum someone posted this:

A = 'DEF'
A2 = 'XYZ'
A0 = 'XXX'
A0 = 'ZZZ'
CRT A

When run gives
XXX]ZZZ]DEF]XYZ

So A0 = X  is a way quicker way of writing A = X : @fm : A

RE: [U2] UniObjects - read .rtf doc from UV server

2008-07-08 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Tony,

It is a VB.Net application. Using UO.Net to interface with UniVerse.

The System Administrator must set up a template of two documents. There are
rules on how to do these documents. It is pulled into a richtextbox in VB.
Where bold, italic, bullets etc. can be used. These documents will sit on
the UV Server.

Other users will get these document templates - the application will fill
in the tags (e.g. Date will be replaced with the date in the correct
format, Name will be replaced with the real name etc.)

The user then will have the option to print this document. The completed
document will then (with unique key) be written to the UV Server.

That's about it

Louie

I understand you aren't going to use Word and that you have your
solution.

Just so that we understand how you're using the environment, I'm
curious about exactly what the application for a Rich Text
document is. It looks like you're allowing users to create
templates which are used to populate data. I'm wondering who is
creating the templates and who is consuming the final document -
that would affect the choice of tools.

I've found that very frequently people ask how do I do _this_
when _this_ isn't really the best way to handle the real business
problem. It's the difference between strategic and tactical, and
while some people get a little miffed with some asks about their
approach, sometimes another set of eyes/ears can improve the
tactical approach a great deal - or in this case help any of us
tackling a similar problem.

Hi Bjorn

Life is great, thanx.

VB Application, using UniObjects to UV.

The .rtf template is on the UV Server. Must read it into rtf text box in VB.
Replace tags and display it for user to print.

Each .rtf doc (user might not have Word) document needs to be saved on UV
Server.

Hello Mr Gouws.

I trust life is treating you well :D

Why do you not just read it into a word document? And to wite it back,
just save it as a record. It is pure text and you should have no
hassels.

Same as U2 BASIC via sequential read/write. Check out the UniObjects for
.NET documentation for the UniSequentialFile Class.

If it is a large complex .RTF then, you may be far better processing it
server-side - if feasible.

As the round robin impact of sending the data to the client and back to
the server again can be an issue for some applications/networks. Also,
some consideration about multiple users updating it simultaneously -
potentially - needs to be considered, if you wish to avoid file corrupt.

Rtf is normally just text that is formatted a special way that rtf readers
and writers understand - the rtf specification
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa140277.aspx, so you can write a uv
pgm that read's/or writes that type of file using simple openseq/readseq -

I'm actually creating the template .rtf in VB.Net. then I will write it to

Just be warned - rtf isn't as portable as it's supposed to be. I wrote rtf
files from UV and they would read perfectly okay in some word processors and
not in others.

Oh - and just doing a read, save in Word of a file created in UV increased
the file size horrendously ...

There might be some routines on PickWiki that write rtf - I can't remember
if I uploaded them or not.

 I have created one BP file containing the main procedure (say

 error Unable to open BP.O/SUB for cataloging.Also I want to view

 Thanks
 Anita
=-=-=

Hallo Anita,

Something that might help the lingo a bit

In the U2 environment we talk about a file (being a collection of records)
on a Windows platform that normally equates to a folder and files

i.e

In U2 environment
in Windows
File = BP
Folder = BP
With records OR items OR programs (in this case)with files
MAIN
MAIN
SUB
SUB

In this particular case (if you're on a windows platform) , the BP file was
probably created as a type 19 file and it will be exactly like the windows
example above in your folders in windows.

But to get back to your question

1. if your BP file was created correctly... once you compile the first
program/subroutine it will create the BP.O file (this is the file that
contains all the compiled code - only for the BP file)

- compile a program e.g BASIC BP MAIN
BASIC BP SUB

2. After you have compiled the program, you must catalog the program, and
this will create an entry in the MD (or VOC) file

- catalog a program e.g. CATALOG BP MAIN
 CATALOG BP SUB

3. to see all the programs (from the BP file) that was compiled - SORT BP.O

4. to see all the programs from the BP file that was catalog 'ed - a bit
different

- you must select the MD or VOC with a certain attribute = BP

RE: [U2] [UV][OT]Embed command in CSV file?

2005-10-20 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Barry,

Why don't you do a macro in excel that will do the Format/row/autofit and
let your users have it?

Subject: [U2] [UV][OT]Embed command in CSV file?

A little off-topic...

From universe, I am creating a sequential file which is formatted as a CSV
file, in other words each field is quoted and separated from each other by
commas, for example:

  John,Jacob,Dingleheimer Schmidt

The intent is that the resulting file is opened with Excel.

You can force any cell into multiple lines by embedding a CHAR(10), for
example:

  WRITESEQ \John,Jacob,Dingleheimer\:CHAR(10):\Schmidt\ TO MY.CSV.FILE
THEN NULL

...when viewed in Excel will give you...

JohnJacobDingleheimer
 Schmidt

...which is a great way of expressing multi-values.

Finally I arrive at the crux. When you open such a document in Excel, it
only displays one line per row even if a cell in that row contains multiple
lines. To see all lines you have to select all and hit FORMAT | ROW |
AUTOFIT. My users seem to be incapable of dealing with that, so...

...does anyone know if it is possible to embed some kind of command in a CSV
file that will get Excel to autofit those rows automatically?

RE: [U2] [UV] Windows 2003 password

2005-02-10 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi All,

Universe 10.0.4
Windows 2003 Server

I want to change the Windows 2003 password via my UV application (thru
Telnet).

The application is totally dependant on the Windows user + password for
security, and I want the users to change their own passwords say every 30
days.

Is it possible?

Note: If the Windows 2003 password setup says every 30 days you must change
our password - you can work for longer thru UV + telnet, without Windows
2003 forcing you to change your password. Is this a short-coming of UV ?

Try this from the UV command prompt. You may need to qualify the domain if
you are using domain based security.

DOS /C NET USER user_id new_passwd [/domain]

See C:\NET HELP USER for all the other net user options

RE: Unclassified RE: [U2] Numeric rounding - UV 9.4 10.1

2004-09-22 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi,

According to my knowledge the R#12 (in the post R#0) is a justification
not a numeric conversion.

The Y = X '0' is a numeric conversion

If you put Y = X R0 then you will get the same result as Y = X 0 namely
1235

Quick follow up: One of the guys discovered this:

Run the following pgm, then uncomment out the last 2 lines and run it
again.
Watch what happens to the first value for Y

X = 1234.78
Y = X 0
CRT X
CRT Y

* Y = XR#0
* CRT Y

[U2] Suggestion

2004-09-16 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi all,

I want to make a suggestion.

When posting a question, say what you want to do. I'm using Nick's question
as an example (no malice intended):

What is the fastest way to process a long string byte by byte. I want

to know if there is a faster way to do the following: etc..

10 responses (3 hours) later he came out with:

I'm trying to parse some very long XML code. If I do it byte by byte

this way, it is taking a very long time to parse. We are trying to find

a faster way to parse it.

Then there was the one that started off by talking about printer and
capturing into a file etc... ended up wanting to capture something about
telephones etc.

RE: [U2] [UV] Processing a string

Hi Nick,

In this case the do stuff with VAR here is very important

For example: If you want to change all VM to SVM in a long string then
STR.VAR = CHANGE(STR.VAR,VM,SVM) will be faster

It all depends on ...stuff...

Hi All,

We are trying to use UniObject for UniData to get
information for various web projects. Most of the
Front End is done using VB .Net. It looks like
UniObject is using a user license for each connection.
There would be thousands of students using this
application and we are having a licensing issue.
Should we structure our program differently? Has
anyone else come a cross the same problem? If so what
did you do?

Thanks a lot.

I have universe 9 on a windows 2000 server and would like to attached to the
rs232 port on the server a dumb terminal, has anyone done this and if so how
do I setup the port.

My intention is to capture an input line from a rs232 printer port.

I would logon a the rs232 port and start a basic program with an input
prompt. then start the remote computer running a report to the rs232 port on
the server and capture the report to a file.

Thanks

RE: [U2] UV Help needed

2004-07-01 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Ashish,

The temporary records, are they important to the application?

If uniVerse creates 10 records does the C daemon process 10 records?

If I compare the temporary records to Word creating a ~$filename.doc
when you open a document then my feeling is to ignore these temporary
records. Only valid records written by uniVerse will be processed.

Louie

p.s Or force the uniVerse records to have a say prefix of ## and only
process the records from C if it has a ##

Hi Louie,

Answering your questions for better understanding-

(1) Yes Universe program is creating and writing to the file and then daemon
process picks these records to process

(2) C daemon deletes the record after processing it

(3) Temporary files are there for very small duration of time, first of all
C daemon selects the record names and then processes them one by one.
While selecting the record name it encounters records with name DBnnn, but
at the time of processing the record it is not able to find and open the
record using fopen etc. in c program (may be because it is temporary
record). And we are not able to see the record.

We encountered such situation in our production environment where there is
huge amount of data coming and being processed.

Regards,
Ashish.

Ashish

Tell us more.

1. Is the uniVerse phantom creating + writing the file for the C daemon to
process?
2. Is the C daemon deleting the file when it has finished processing it?
3. What do you see as a temporary file?

Depending on your answers, we can make a better judgement call

Hi All,

We are facing a problem of temporary file being generated in our
application.

Scenario is-
One of our program is writing records in type 19 file. We have another C
daemon process which reads these records from the file.

Both of these processes are running continuously as phantom/daemon
processes.
But sometimes C daemon process encounters the temporary files with name like
DBnnn (where nnn is some number).
Since these are temporary files C process cannot open and process the data
of
this file. By the time C program tries to open this file, the file DBnnn is
deleted and is not found in the directory.

Has any body encountered similar situation?
Is it due to the design that Universe and C programs are accessing the same
file to read and write the data?

Any pointers to resolve this problem are welcome.

Regards,
Ashish.

Re: [U2] [UV] WHILE READNEXT id DO

2004-06-17 Thread Louie Gouws
Hi Adrian,

I personally use:

EOF=0
LOOP
   READNEXT id ELSE EOF=1
   code
UNTIL EOF DO
   code
REPEAT

It is much clearer(i hope) to the next guy looking at the code.

Louie.

Adrian wrote:

LOOP
   code
WHILE READNEXT id DO
   more code
REPEAT

This format of the READNEXT statement is used in a couple of places in the
UniVerse BASIC manual. It looks like READNEXT is returning a Boolean.

If I look up READNEXT in the manual (or in HELP from TCL) - there is no
mention of this format of the statement.

And in the manual the THEN and ELSE are enclosed in braces: {THEN
statements
[ELSE statements] | ELSE statements}
which according to convention means that I have to choose one
non-optional
item.

Has this format of the statement just been left out of the manual by
mistake
or is it a new format, that was never documented.

And, what are people's thoughts on using this format. Personally I dislike
it, as it isn't easily readable, it's not documented and it's not a
standard
use of the statement syntax.
