RE: [U2] Reading Excel worksheets natively from within Universe

2004-05-27 Thread Peter Olson
i wrote some subroutines that creates the binary excel worksheets ( biff5
format ) in basic. but first i had to figure out how the different versions
( excel, excel97, excel2000 ) ...were structured.

there's a little help on google but not much on the ole2 file structure (
stuff after excel97 ) .i wrote a program to break out the records and
convert the data ( numbers ) from ieee floating point to decimal...so to
answer your questiona little bit. what do you want to know? email me off
line.

i hope you like playing with bits :)

Subject: [U2] Reading Excel worksheets natively from within Universe

Good day all,

Does anyone have any experience reading MS Excel worksheets natively from
within Universe basic? I know I can export the worksheets to csv or text
files and then read them but much prefer to be able to read in a more
automated fashion.

If you have any experience and willing to share some knowledge please let me
know.

Thank you,

If you're running UV on Windows - I think (never actually tried it) you can
setup Excel worksheets as ODBC Data Sources; then use BCI to pull the data
directly with a Basic program.

RE: [U2] Reading Excel worksheets natively from within Universe

2004-05-27 Thread Jefferson, Jim
I've used the documentation at openoffice.org (search there for excel file format) to
help write code to read/write Excel directly from Arev applications (old version
without all the fancy new stuff in OpenInsight), and this would be equally possible
from UV. But it's a brute-force approach and I'd only recommend it after all other
options are exhausted.

While I am no longer offering NebulAnalysis at the moment, you can see from
our web page that I have considerable experience with controlling Excel
directly from MV. In lieu of product, we can offer consultation and
development services for tight Excel integration, using NebulAnalysis as the
tool of choice. People keep asking me to offer NebulAnalysis again, but
I've never been able to get the critical mass of business required to keep
it going. The price was super reasonable at a couple hundred bucks, but
somehow people think they can do the same thing themselves with AccuTerm or
wIntegrate at an even lower cost. God love um, have fun.

Inquiries welcome.

Tony
