This could be done differently. Try hitting the spacebar on one of these
or the enter key if that fails. Also, what happens if you tab right
through the language selection and leave it alone? Does the system
complain that a language wasn't selected?

That's odd. Usually language selection uses two color sets one different
from all others on one of the choices. The other thing language selection
usually does which I find far more accessible is to place sets of brackets
