Yes, that's quite muddy unfortunately. Very difficult to tell that the
orange blobs are the Ubuntu logo.

Fixing that might involve using a single unbroken box, and/or making
the box larger.

Another small issue is that the red of the parachute competes with the
orange of the logo.

I like how that suggests the presence of a parachute without actually
showing it. Clever.

The style is a bit unusual. Most icons in Ubuntu are drawn as objects
with hyper-realistic shading and outlines, and no backdrop of their
own. Even Ubuntu One, which is a solid flat logo in print and on the
Web, has subtle lighting and shadows when drawn as an icon. So an icon
like yours, with flat and nearly-flat shapes and a circular backdrop,
would be a bit incongruous.

While the idea of an airdrop/parachute is nice, as someone else
also pointed out, people are more used to the arrows and it is
easier to use that known metaphor for updates to make it easier
 for people to recognise updates.

It may be true that people are more used to arrows. I have nothing
against using arrows. But that doesn't mean it's the only known
metaphor.

For example, most often when people install software updates anywhere,
they're doing it on Windows. Windows doesn't use arrows for its
updates icon.

Since updates are something that need to be a part of Software
centre, it is better to have a Software Updater icon that is a
derivative of the original Software centre icon rather than making
it look like a completely different/unrelated app.

If anyone ever implements updates in USC, it will be one way of
installing application updates. It will not be the only way to install
any updates. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates#approaches

Besides that, installing updates has nothing to do with shopping. So a
Software Updater icon that looked related to shopping would have a
non-sequitur problem like the current icon.

Your proposal is extremely well drawn (nice job!), but unfortunately
it has all three problems. It still has the A, it still has the fake
progress bar, and it looks like shopping too. :-)

Thanks. Unfortunately that isn't really appropriate because it

It's best to use text in an icon only when that's essential for what
you're trying to convey, e.g. Italics or word processor.

That looks pretty good! However, the problem isn't *just* the A. :-)

If you've run Software Updater yourself, you'll see that it uses the
standard Launcher progress bar when updates are installing.

So it's a bad idea for the Software Updater icon (or any Launcher
icon) to include a fake progress bar of its own. Otherwise one can get
confused for the other, and when there's actual progress you end up
with two progress bars visible at once.

[ubuntu-art] New icon needed: Software Updater

2013-01-23 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi folks

We have a usability problem in Software Updater (formerly known as
Update Manager).

The problem is that when the updates dialog appears by itself, there's
no visual clue that this is an official Ubuntu thing. In Ubuntu 12.10
and earlier, the icon is just a brown box with an orange arrow. And in
Raring right now, it's an A with a progress bar and arrows around it
- -- again, nothing obviously to do with Ubuntu, and a bit of a non
sequitur too.

So, it would help if we had a new icon, one which obviously
communicates that these are official updates for Ubuntu.

One possibility that I've suggested is an airdrop -- a wooden box
being lowered by parachute, where either the box or the parachute (but
not both!) features the Ubuntu logo.
http://www.google.com/search?q=airdroptbm=isch Maybe you have other
ideas too.

Please post your proposals here, or DeviantArt, or Imgur, or wherever
suits you, and link to them in a reply here.

Let's get something really classy into Ubuntu 13.04.

Thanks!

As I said for your previous mockup, it probably isn't a good idea to
require horizontal scrolling for the list of categories. Grouping a
dozen of them under Other isn't really a good solution.

This mockup also introduces Mystery Meat navigation for the top-level

Interesting mockup.

Using a borderless menu, with Ajustar al ancho de pagina as one of
its options, would have one of two results. Either the menu would
change in width when you chose other options, so the triangle and the
folder icon would wobble about. Or there would be a large gap between
the value and the triangle with most of the options (50%, 100%, etc).

Progress bars should be used only where humans are waiting for
computers to do things. To use them for anything else, like pages
here, is confusing. Use a custom scrub bar graphic instead.

As soon as you got to page 100, Anterior would have to jump to the
left to make room. That could get annoying if you had to flip between
pages 99 and 100 for any reason.

If you would like to help out with design work, that would be excellent!

Here's a simple task to start off with: redesigning the Jockey tool.

Open System Settings. Under the Hardware section, choose Additional
Drivers. You should see a window something like this:
http://imgur.com/jCUXR

Now, think of half a dozen ways to present this interface differently.
For example, as:
* its own panel inside System Settings (instead of a window)
* part of the System Info panel of System Settings (since it's about
hardware)
* part of Ubuntu Software Center (since it's about installing/removing
software, specifically drivers)
* part of Update Manager (since installing a proprietary driver, like
installing updates, is something you may need to do shortly after
installing Ubuntu).

Identify benefits and disadvantages of each approach, and make a
recommendation. :-)

Some questions you might consider when choosing a design:
* What should its title be? http://launchpad.net/bugs/635640
* If there is an additional driver available, how should an Ubuntu
user learn this automatically? http://launchpad.net/bugs/617392
* What should happen if the interface is invoked manually, when no
extra drivers are available? http://launchpad.net/bugs/520871
* How can people make an informed decision about whether to install a
driver? http://launchpad.net/bugs/397465
http://launchpad.net/bugs/512902
http://launchpad.net/bugs/550083
* What should happen if there's no Internet connection when you try to
download a driver? http://launchpad.net/bugs/299023
* How should progress be shown? http://launchpad.net/bugs/290242
http://launchpad.net/bugs/614827
* What should happen if a driver fails to install?
http://launchpad.net/bugs/311650
* What should happen after a driver is installed or removed?
http://launchpad.net/bugs/739242
* Should searching for a printer driver use the same interface, or a
custom interface? http://launchpad.net/bugs/596141

If you're interested in this task, or if there's something else in
particular you'd like to work on, let me know.

needed as to the scope, artwork aspects etc. Only thing we really need
is a general date. I humbly put forwards skipping the spec in this
case and just creating a link to /DepartmentVisualDesign under our
tasks page. with a due date.

User interface freeze for Natty is March 24th, so I think February 24th
is reasonable to decide on a style, before applying it to all the
departments.

...
 Included the task to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Tasks

I have updated
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter/DepartmentVisualDesign to
include the Artwork team task data.

@Matthew, Once you set a due date, Any plans for announcing this to a
 wider audience?

I just posted it on Twitter and Identica. I may post it on
design.canonical.com later too.

Thanks

A question for matthew: what kind of programs are under accessories, and
system? cant check since I am on kubuntu.

The categories are probably the same
http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html, though the
label may be different.

Examples: Activity Journal, Alarm Clock, KTimer, LeafPad, Disk Usage
Analyzer, Docky, Gourmet Recipe Manager, Kate, Waterfall font viewer,
Zipper.

   Also I am assuming that
universal access is just accessibility programs?
...

Yes. Virtual keyboards, screen readers, magnifiers, etc.

 Matthew,
Is there a way to use GTK theme colors? You know, white background
looks too bright in dark themes, and the blue color used in Maverick is
neutral and unobtrusive, but doesn't feel consistent with the rest of
 the desktop.
...

The white background in USC already follows the GTK theme. For example,
in the High Contrast Inverse theme, it's dark blue. But the existence
of themability shouldn't prevent us from using color to distinguish things.

One possibility is that each department should have a different overall
color. Green for Science Engineering, purple for Fonts, red for
Education, and so on.

Another possibility is that the screen for each application should have
a gradient based on the color most used in its icon, like the Unity
launcher does.

If the final set of background art is monochrome, the version used in
the code will be black with transparency, so that USC can tint it to the
appropriate color at runtime.

[ubuntu-art] Wanted: Artwork for Ubuntu Software Center department screens

2010-12-10 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas

Hi folks

I'm not a regular on this list, so please forgive me if I get anything
wrong.

The Ubuntu Software Center developers are on a mission to make USC a joy
to use. We're doing this in several different ways: adding new features,
making it faster, making it more responsive, and running user tests and
fixing usability problems.

While we're doing all those things, we would also like to make USC
prettier. As part of that, we're considering adding some custom artwork
to each of the individual department screens -- Games, Internet,
Sound Video, and so on.

I have written up a design brief for this work.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter/DepartmentVisualDesign

I'd be delighted if anyone here can propose a beautiful style of artwork
we could use across these screens. Feel free to publish it wherever you
like, just reply here with a link to it.

If you have any questions, please also reply here and I will answer them
on Monday.

Thanks

Re: [ubuntu-art] Meerkat volume control design

2010-10-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
come up with a solution that will work
for every GTK menu, without special-casing this one.
http://imgur.com/WkgcB?full (This screenshot shows a fix for *only*
this problem, not any of the other problems.)

In other cases, however, an active choice was clearly made but that
choice doesn't address the element's purpose. Why should a volume
control menu be labelled Mute? Etc.
...

Because that's exactly what the item does. (If the speakers are already
muted, it says Unmute.)

I just wanted to offer my observations, though I wasn't too sure how
to go about it. It's strange that there isn't a dedicated mailing
list for design issues. Are these handled on a component-by-component
basis? How do the designers interact with the engineers?

It's mostly component-by-component. Unfortunately, there isn't a
browsable directory of Ubuntu components to get involved with. For the
Ayatana project, we use the #ayatana IRC channel
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList and mailing list.

How would I
go about changing the design of the volume control menu myself?
...

The code for the sound menu, the Ubuntu Mono icon theme, and the Light
themes, are all on Launchpad.
https://code.launchpad.net/indicator-sound
https://code.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mono
https://code.launchpad.net/light-themes

Thanks again for your feedback. As drfugly wrote in

|
| We need more of this. Lots more of this.

Currently the gconf schema default for the ubuntu wallpaper is set to

does not update existing installation and we can't leave upgrading
 users without a desktop wallpaper.

What happens if someone logs in and their chosen background picture
can't be found? If the answer is anything other than it reverts to the
OS default (or it uses a cached version, and if that's missing too, it
reverts to the OS default), that's a bug that can be fixed. Once it's
fixed, you can change the OS default at will.
