Re: [ubuntu-art] What would you like to work on?

2010-09-20 Thread Dea Million
I've also been lurking on the list for a while, only to contribute when I
didn't have to be too technical. Meaning, do JUST the art and not have to
package.

I'm one of those that Martin talks about
Part of the problem with art from a packaging side is that very few
artists know how to package themes, wallpapers and other things, should we
have an education project based around that

I know that if I had adequate time, I'd be able to learn the mechanics of
packaging. However, until that day, I'm seeking fun and EASY work... like
t-shirt designs and simple marketing materials.

What would you like to work on? Don't be shy, this is not binding.
 - Ubuntu

Yes

 - Kubuntu
 - Xubuntu
 - Edubuntu
 - Lubuntu

I haven't worked or seen any of these other distributions.

 - Distribution/flavor independent
 - Themes
 - Wallpapers
 - Icons

All include packaging.

 - Posters, flyers, marketing material

Yes. Very interested.

 - Requested artwork for *buntu-related projects

Not sure what this is.

 - Sounds
 - Videos

No..

 - Planning
 - Implementation (draw a wallpaper, edit a gtkrc ...)
 - Packaging
 - Testing
 - Bug fixing
 - Write a better theme engine
 - Fix theming related issues in GTK+

No..

 - Develop infrastructure to assist creative processes and/or making our
 work easily available

This is a great idea! I'd be interested in helping brainstorm around this
idea. However, not sure how else I can contribute.

What are your related skills and experiences?

Computer Based Training... would be nice to work on the future of CBT for
Ubuntu. Also, see my website for more... www.deamillion.com

Are there issues that have been hindering you, that we could address,
 perhaps? Am I scary?

Haven't met you yet... maybe you are scary? ;)

Circle around the CoF on Right Side is too similar to the background or
vice versa. If I try to imagine how this will end up with a person in
it, I doubt the logo-type on the arms will work well (kinda cylindrical
 surface, bend, wrinkled).

I just wanted to mention that since these are bike jerseys, typically they
are worn tight. Jerseys that wrinkle and flap in the wind cause drag, which
isn't good. I think the Ubuntu text on the sleeves looks good and would work
well in this case. I've seen lots of other jerseys that have text on the
sleeves like that and they look nice.

I made the logo smaller on the sleeves. Maybe this will help with the
wrinkling, bend.

This approach to the lynx could be great, strong, wild, fast, but you
should try to make the cat more recognizable.

I borrowed the image of the lynx from a t-shirt that Canonical gave away at the
last UDS. I'd still like to find the original artist, so I can get permission
to use it. Kenneth, would/could you help out on this? (Apologies if this is
out of your realm.)

Thinking of the composure of a racing cyclist, the back panel might
 actually be the better canvas.

I think the back would be a good choice too. Most of the time cyclists are
hunched over and you don't get a good look at the front. I think it is good
to have something on the front, but having the lynx on the back would look
 good too.

I put it on the front because I noticed the racing numbers go on the back.
However, the following links show it on the back, above where the number would
be placed. I made two versions, because for some reason, I don't like the
white lynx on the back. Anyone have a preference?

Thank you for working on this!

I totally agree! Thank you very much Dea. This is going to be an awesome
 jersey!

[ubuntu-art] Introduction

I've been a graphic designer for almost 20 years and am excited about this
community. However, I must say I'm feeling a bit intimated and clumsy with
understanding how the whole thing works. I'm trusting UDS Brussels will help.

I'd also like to say, BRAVO to all who came up with the new color scheme and

Thanks, and I look forward to helping out in any way I can.

the jersey. Ubuntu has a unique mascot for each release. My thought was
that we would design a jersey that incorporated the mascots of our releases.
The style of the Hardy Heron wallpaper was pretty popular and would probably
look good on jerseys. Here is a link to the wall paper I'm referring to:
 http://images.google.com/images?q=hardy+heron+wallpaper

The jersey could include the current supported releases or we could try to
incorporate them all. The jersey isn't limited to a predefined set of
colors, so we really have a lot of leeway in our design.

Here is the list of mascots so you don't have to look them up:

 Lucid Lynx
 Karmic Koala
 Jaunty Jackalope
 Intrepid Ibex
 Hardy Heron
 Dapper Drake

 Gutsy Gibbon
 Feisty Fawn
 Edgy Eft
 Breezy Badger
 Hoary Hedgehog
 Warty Warthog

I realize that there is a wiki page for Ubuntu Jerseys, but I feel that we
want to push the boundaries more than these designs. The jerseys appear to
be limited by the number of colors that they can contain due to manufacturing
limits. Plus, they appear to just reuse a lot of logos and I'm hoping for
 something new and exciting.

Here is a link to some designs that another cycling team in the Multiple
Sclerosis ride received when they placed a bid on the crowdspring.com design
 site. http://www.crowdspring.com/project/1283223_cycling-jersey-logo-vin/

Check out the Ubuntu jerseys here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCyclists

I've picked out a company to print our jerseys. They require that the design
be in the SVG format. Here is a link to the templates that they recommend
 using when designing.

 Shorts template:
 http://champ-sys.com/media/FullWrap%20U%20Panel%20MBI040.pdf

They have some notes about the black areas of the templates. The black area
can be one of seven pre-dyed colors. I recommend checking out the notes on
 the page.

The Diabetes ride is in June and the Multiple Sclerosis ride is in September.
The manufacturing process takes 6 to 8 weeks, so we have some time to
 design.

I look forward to hearing from the group. This is an exciting opportunity
for your artwork to be seen by thousands of participants in these events.
Please let me know if you have questions or need additional information.

 Sincerely,
 Trey Ethridge

 Hello Déa,

Yes. I still need help. Thorsten Wilms stated that he would help too,
however I haven't received any mockups yet. I believe that he is working on
something now. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you also helped out. The way I
see it is the more ideas the better.

We established that we need to have the design by the April 11th in order for
us to get the jerseys printed in time for the June ride. If we could have it
completed by the end of March that would be even better.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm open to all ideas/designs.

 Hello all,

I haven't received a response from anyone that would like to help out with
this project. I feel that this is a great opportunity for someone that is
looking to expand their portfolio. These are cycling jersey's that have the
approval of the marketing team at Canonical. There are several Canonical
employees that plan to purchase these jersey's.

If I don't get any help from the community, I'm going to have to raise money
and hire a professional artist. If you have an interest in this project,
 please let me know.

 Thank you,

Sounds like fun! I'll take a stab at it! I could even do a Flash animation.

I would actually really like to see someone make this wallpaper. :D
