I restarted my session yesterday, and haven't used FireFox at all. So
far, my system has not touched swap. Xorg is running a nice, lean 782m
virt (670mb res) vs. the over twice as much it was using within a few
hours of starting X yesterday.

I've seen the Problem already exists. I have reinstalled Dapper on a PC
with Eizo S1910. The Probleme is here and is BIG! I have to install
Breezy before and then upgrade to dapper. Then in xorg i have to add
this line under DEVICE (Option DDCMode.
I think you have to do something, because no
i *didn't* encounter this bug when installing from the kubuntu Dapper
live. I've choosen french during ubiquity-kde stage. Atfer install is
finished and reboot, kdm is still in english, but the KDE session is
localized as expected (in french).

I think it's the lack of the following lines, which are found in the
usplash postrm script:

update-initramfs -u

This should force a recreation of the ramdisks. This line is in usplash
postrm, but not in kubuntu-artwork-usplash, oddly enough
I'm not experienced enough to assist you with configuring firestarter :)
If you're convinced it's not a configuration issue and that firestarter
is broken, you may want to file a bug against firestarter. Before doing
