Sorry, removing the splash kernel parameter only appeared to fix the
problem on that one boot, however on subsequent boots the problem has
returned, regardless of this setting. It is likely then that usplash is
not at fault, although I am not sure what is.

I have the same problem on an ASUS M2N8-VMX motherboard.
After installation I could reach the boot menu occasionally, but most of the

Were you able to hook these scripts with the shutdown gui? What about
associating them with actions such as lid close?

for what it's worth i think thunderbird2 uses proper notifications on
linux too, although i'm not 100% sure. so i think that'll be fixed when
thunderbird2 is in ubuntu. for now we're at beta2, so it probably won't
make it in feisty...

There already is reserved space (for root, and gdm is launched as root)
however this space can be filled by root itself using e.g. apt or
pbuilder. Reserving space for a single program might be interesting but
would require kernel modification.

it pops back down from full screen it's half the screen but even on the
wrong side of the screen...
