I installed kubuntu-desktop and checked it out. The problem remains the
same.
But some more testing:
I cleared my playlist (which previously had all my music files listed),
and the problem went away. Amarok starts almost instantaneously. I don't
know why I didn't try that before.

partitions. The first is recognised as /dev/hdc1 with a FAT32

I recently had a cleanup on my old 40Gb iPod and I deleted the majority
of old music and decided to upload some of my recently ripped purchases.

I have found a patch to rdesktop which sounds like it fixes a similar if

Well, it does. I recently upgraded my Xubuntu installation to Feisty and
yesterday I noticed my gam_server taking 60-99% of the cpu constantly.
But kierfayt's workaround seemed to do the trick for now.
