Installs i686 kernel also on i586 -
Pauli (or anyone else with *specifically* an AMD K6 affected by this
problem), could you please attach your /proc/cpuinfo to this bug? I
don't have an AMD K6 sample, and would like to have a /proc/cpuinfo to
include in our test suite to ensure that I fix this properly. Thanks in
advance.

Simple enough work around. to start Samba cold open up a command line and
just type in sudo /usr/sbin/smbd -D
Press the OK. Re bring up the command line and type in sudo /usr/sbin/nmbd -D
Those commands will cause Samba to re-start.

After investigation, I *believe* that -generic will work fine on these
CPUs, so I'm enabling that. Please let me know if this doesn't work
after all.

Gutsy tribe-5 installer doesn't suggest a suitable kernel for Via C3
base-installer (1.81ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low
* Treat pre-Nehemiah Via C3s as 586, so they use the -generic kernel
(LP: #137340).

Gutsy tribe-5 installer doesn't suggest a suitable kernel for Via C3 CPU - but
Huh? I provided the requested info awhile ago, did this get lost
somehow? Shouldn't this be a bug that should be worked on for the
release of Gutsy? Any more info needed I would be happy to provide as
this is a major bug IMO.
