The error could be in a number of places: fsck, blkid,
fsck.{jfs,reiserfs}, some place else.
Some things to try with example code:
- look at /etc/rcS.d/S30checkfs.sh
I don't know if it helps, but the problem was present on Kubuntu 7.10 as
well, not using compiz or beryl (straight X, no XGL or AIGLX). I don't
believe that Kubuntu uses gnome-applets. It could be a separate problem
that happens to look a lot like this one, or there could be a lower
level root

Both Intel nVidia card worked without problems and detected the
correct resolution (1280x800 in my case).
I also tried running Virtualbox with the nVidia card under Windows XP
and it also stays @ 800x600. (Both Ubuntu Kubuntu)
Also (maybe worth mentioning) I'm using VT-x (my CPU supports it)
I decided to risk it and install Gutsy anyway. And I'm sorry to report
that the problem with the nv driver remains: X is very unstable,
completely freezing the system every few minutes.
I am running out of options here, because I don't feel like reinstalling
