I tried extracting the contents of both the 2.6.20 and 2.6.22 kernels. I
copied the lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic (gutsy) into the lib/modules

I experience the exact same thing with a fresh Kubuntu: I am told that a
newer Kubuntu is ready, and during the upgrade process it reports that I
have the newest version, and there is a button to record a bug. It also
tells me that libportaudio0 is unsupported by Canonical. The bug is
reproducible
I haven't seen this behaviour in a while so I'll close the bug as
Invalid. Should it appear again I'll reopen this one or open a new
one. No need to keep this bug open indefinetly, especially if I can't
reproduce it.

The only thing that really worked for me was reinstalling gdm:

I do have the same problem here, with 7.04 erverything worked fine, now
with 7.10 I can not setup a vpn-connection over pptp with
knetworkmanager. This behavior stops the upgrade-process to 7.10 in my
company.
