Well, when I posted on 2007-10-16 it was recent.
I have not experienced this issue since this update to the Gutsy usplash
package. I don't know if that was my solution or not, but IIRC there
didn't seem to be any other packages updated at the same time which
could have possibly effected this

I had usplash not work from a clean install of Xubuntu Gutsy on a
Gateway Solo 9300. When X started the screen would work, but it was
blank for about a minute between grub and login.
Fixed by changing /etc/usplash.conf to
xres=1024
yres=768
and then running

I confirm on 2 DELL laptops, the 1st one 18 months old with
Load_Cycle_Count around 90, the 2nd one 1 month old with 25000. I
just applied the hdparm.conf workaround as explained several time above.
This issue in Wishlist is inapproprate. It should be considered as
high or critical.

After spending 2 days trying all sort of kernel boot options, I finally
decided to take one last desperate attempt to get Ubuntu running, and
boldly flashed the BIOS with the newest firmware.

Thanks. Being new to Ubuntu it took me some time to realise that the plugin
had to be uninstalled using the Synaptics package manager. I tried
installing the icedtea-java plugin as you suggested but got a 'bad
signature' error. The Sun plugins also refuse to get installed. Anyway, I
And I'm getting this behavior on a clean install of Gutsy, using a wired
connection, so I guess it shouldn't be closed.

I also got this error while upgrading with update-manager... So no
console log.
Afterwards I manually unsinstalled emacs 21 and installed 22.. Seems
like there was a conflict.
