I have the same problem with Firestarter GUI on Xubuntu 7.10 amd64
As long as I don`t touch active connections drop-down list,
firestarter stays.

Can't reach internet.
DNS failures.
awk: not found in casper.log
/etc/resolv.conf is misformed / missing actual settings.

The initrd image does not contain awk, so scripts/casper-
bottom/23networking fails to translate netboot.config to a proper
resolv.conf.

Well i got it working!
I just installed a new asus lightscribe dvd burner and put my old dvd
drive as the slave, and now all works as it should.
Strange thing is that the cd drive that was causing this problem is
still plugged in and is working, i think its because its now as a slave
