The adept update manager still wants to remove many adept realted packeges, but
when I tried an upgrade through apt I got:

Actually, I suppose Thunar can not copy and cut files, so there is
nothing to paste. No success with any file I have tried. I just tried
that it is the same thing with Nautilus, but emelfm can copy and move.
So the problem may be in xclipboards way to interfere to clipboard

explains that you have to select "manual" repartitioning, then create a
swap space of at least 500meg.. etc, etc.
So you prepare yourself for that bit of linux unpleasantness... then in the
repartitioning

If you use the guided option for repartitioning, in the case where you want to
shrink an existing (windows) partition, and install Ubuntu into the freed
space, there is a slider, which says (something like) "how big do you want the
new partition to be".
