This may be the same bug as I had and also bugs 154162, 161215, 175822.

graphical install, text install appears to hang after reboot. Fixed by
installing latest ATI drivers (8.1 Jan 2008 ) and setting default screen

Binary package hint: console-tools
README.Debian says:
THE console-tools package is no longer maintained upstream, and is
deprecated, being replaced by the 'kbd' package.
Being replaced where? Because surely not in Ubuntu.

Same problem or similar: Miro only crash when it is searching Miro
Guide. I had the same problem with other versions of miro even with the
versions that are included in the repository. I don't know if this
error is related to this bug or if it's a new one to be treated
elsewhere... Thanks.

needs Java runtime. As far as error logs are concerned, it does't come up with
any error list as it loading but unable to start or show up.
You can see it clearly in the screen shot i have attached limewire loads
I think I have a work around. Completely uninstall slapd ( both) in
synaptic and the reinstall them both. You are then asked for a password
and thats it. I hope.

You're hitting a known (but somewhat crazy) bug in Java. Installing
icedtea-java7 should fix that error for you.
Additionally, can people who are *not* using a Miro package from the
official Ubuntu repositories please refrain from posting their bugs
here? I can't do anything about your problems
