I had this same issue after doing an a package upgrade (via dselect) this
morning.
The path fix worked, with an additional tweak. I had to edit my
'/etc/X11/default-display-manager' file, and change
'/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdm-kde4' to '/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kdm'. After that, KDM-KDE4

When I reported this problem, I was using rel 5.xx, and I had upgraded
from earlier releases. All the icons moved including the ones that had:
'Lock to Panel' option. Also I had made many changes to my system on my
own. So, to make this story short, in my case I resolved this problem by
installing

We recently upgraded our mail server to a (backported-to-dapper) hardy
dovecot because we wanted SSL certificate chaining support but we had
to revert back to dapper-dovecot the next day because the hardy
version was failing under load.
Compiz crashes whenever I'm doing anything related to package management
here, or whenever I do anything related to the software repositories ...
