Hmm, hadn't tried that. I solved it by re-installing scim (only the
minimum required basic packages, no recommends), and then disabling
every of its features. (I just opened its settings and pretty much
unchecked every checkbox...) The dead keys work now.

Regarding INTEL_BATCH=1, I got word from the upstream developers that
they do not recommend shipping Ubuntu with that option turned on by
default. While it may help performance, it also exposes code they feel
is not very stable and could cause crash

how do you get a mobility card installed into a desktop? aren't they
different sizes and connectors?

Bug seems to be fixed by:
replace python-gobject 2.14.1-2 (using .../python-
gobject_2.14.1-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb)
I'm not sure why my base installation pulled in the older python-
gobject. BTW, I installed ubuntu server then manually installed some
components of desktop thus I think there may have
fdb: did you install the older versions of iproute and libdb to work
around the problem?

Yes, the Italian translation in Gnome is correct, but the dpkg database status
is broken, making impossible to install other software via apt.
