(x86_64 2.6.24-19-generic), both using a Thinkpad X60 Tablet and Ubuntu

I have now found that /desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd was true on my
system. Odd since there is no esd,
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd false
has fixed sol.
However, firefox still hangs.

The command
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd false
has fixed seamonkey 2.0 pre A.
Firefox is actually improved somewhat, since it works properly after the
connect() has timed out.
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false
has no effect.

I use Ubuntu hardy 8.04, and now (I think after some upgrade related to gvfs)
after I open a new file in gedit, when I try to save the file the UI hang and
nothing happen (It's possible only to force quit the window).
Instead if the file exists before the function Save works

will accept mail for delivery by virtue of it being in relay_domains
