Did you rebuild your proprietary driver when you upgraded the kernel? Whenever you upgrade the kernel you have to rebuild those drivers. You can use module-assistant for this. What version of the NVIDIA drivers are you using? I thought the GeForce4 used nvidia-legacy-glx instead of nvidia-glx.
