Same problem here. Two LG DVDRW drives sharing the IDE (HD on SATA).
Motherboard Asus P5GC-MX, Intel chipset. After a while, nothing mounts
anymore in either drive. It's incredibly frustrating.

Whith 0: HDA Nvidia (alsa) no button +20 db for boosting mic. In Gutsy
the button was present.
Even with all registers open I have to shout into the mic. to make me loud and
clear.

development branch, and i think LeOx89 with Ubuntu 8.04 was meaning the
development branch too, since Ubuntu 8.04 had not been released yet at the date

Thanks Steve. You helped me fix the problem nicely.
run pam-auth-update --force did not work for me either, but i just did
the update anyway, and received the new package. Thanks for the good
work and trouble shooting. The Ubuntu community is why i switched to
using Linux. That and the fact that
Retagging as a samba bug. If it's failing during winbind configuration,
that's a (serious) fault in the winbind package, which comes from samba.
Try configuring the package from the terminal (sudo dpkg --configure
-a). Is there any output before the restart happens?

This happens on my HP Pavillion dv6000 with Intrepid too, although I cannot
recover.
The screen is *completely* blank (i.e. never turns on), and nothing I do
changes it. CTRL + ALT + F7 does not do anything, nor does blindly entering my
password.

I wish to add that I am experiencing this problem in UbuntuStudio
distribution of *HARDY*. I get one in three reliable boots, other two
all VTs are corrupted until shutdown. I have Intel Mobile 945GM using
