Option AccelMethod EXA doesn't seem to have any effect.
To make sure it was being used, I double checked the Xorg.0.log to make
sure it was coming on, and I do get the:

There are two separate issues here, albeit somewhat related. One is

There was an octave2.1-forge package containing these functions in
Dapper/Feisty/Gutsy, but in Hardy it appears that they were not packaged
at all (they were never made part of the main octave package).
Most of Octave-Forge reappeared in Intrepid, but it was split into its
individual packages;
Some time passed since I posted this bug, but if I remember well (I don't have
ubuntu 7.10 any more), I was not able to reproduce the bug and there was an
error on the procedure I used on the 64bit machine.

First: remember that 8.10 will not install at all because of the
[258.772014]BUG: soft lockup -CPU #0 stuck for 61s ! problem.
Second: although you may know all the ins and outs of this system, I was
attracted to Ubunto because of ease of use. What appears to be required
is not for novices.

With the upgrade to 2.0.0.18 my junk mail controls are broken. I have
made NO changes to any settings, but now mail is not flagged as junk
(even if flagged by SpamAssassin), and is not moved to the junk folder

can you guys tell me the value of timeout in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf ?
try changing that to something like 5 or 10 and tell me if it speeds up your
boot process...

Ubuntu 8.10 booting hangs for a while on configuring
Recently my fast user switcher started to bug, maybe it's conneccted to
this.
There is no shut down or restat option, not even right after login. I
have no other users configured, ecxept the Guest session. But to log in
