My solution was to use Ubuntu with the Blubuntu theme on that laptop.

the possibility to hold a package directly from update-manager, not the

I had a problem with debian etch where I had to press the power button

I confirm I'm having the same punctuation/special chars problem using
Evince 2.22.2/poppler 0.6.4 (cairo) in Ubuntu 8.04.
Characters like éàõ become '`~ like shown in the screenshots attached.
