Just a few other information: the file system permissions problem you describe
is caused by files owned by root and non-world-readable. Running sudo ...
should allow you to access those files. The complete error line points to a
problem with policies : Tomcat

1.) Move your .emacs file to .orig.emacs
2.) Reinstall the slime package.
3.) Open up Emacs and run slime.
Slime will respond with an error message indicating that a lisp program
is not properly specified. Manually fixing this is easy, just create a

Then the whole desktop becomes unresponsive: clicking has no effect on any

I just have to switch to tty1 and kill alarm-clock to get back to

i found out the following:
as asked before, i really did change the splash screen to 'balou'. after
undoing this change xfce4 is working again!
