So, right after posting this, I rebooted the machine. After that I did
use tty1 to login as croessner. I _could_ login to my machine.
After that I used gdm to login into Gnome, opened a terminal and it
produced the given bug. So there really seems to be something inside the
Gnome-environment that

Whenever I try to burn a data DVD disc, k3b uses auto to set speed and I
must manually set it to 12x or k3b does not try to write disc. I have
the latest firware in drive (1.11 I believe), but I have always had
problems with burning dvd's with this drive.
