This affects me too.

Yes - when I set System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects to None,
a normal background appears, and I can move windows without any display

I disagree. Palm only recently announced that it would be dropping
support for the PalmOS. There are a number of people what have PalmOS
devices, such as anyone who owns a Palm Trio cell phone or a Palm TX

Bluetooth seems to be a problematic on its own, not related to
hibernate:
restarting ubuntu the switch is working correctly, but BT only appears
when it was on during boot, booting with BT off or turning it off later
will make it impossible to bring back the functionality with switch.

I can reproduce the bug.
The icon is updated in assogiate but not in nautilus. But when I tried
with another file browser, like thunar, it works. It might be a bug in
nautilus.
Could you try with thunar and see if it works ?
