Okay, I've uninstalled the nvidia drivers and I have a new record uptime
of 32 minutes so far and no lockups.
It seems the culprit might be the nvidia drivers after all.
I am about to install the 2.6.30 kernel to see if it works with the
nvidia drivers.

I too have this issue on a Sager NP2092/Compal JFL92. I have found that
switching the hard drive controller to IDE mode seems to help. However
this is a less than ideal solution.

Running the latest default 64-bit kernel in Jaunty as well: 2.6.28-11.

According to the upstream bug, there should be an option called "Play
system beep sound" under the Sounds tab in GNOME 2.24, but I don't see
that on my Ubuntu 8.10 (GNOME 2.24.1) system.
Did Ubuntu make changes to the preferences screen?

I have encountered the same problem on a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT796HP today.
Hardy has no problems at all, Intrepid and Jaunty wont run properly unless a
key is held down.
I believe this is a problem caused by ACPI/DSDT.aml

usage but top not reflecting this usage. The system is noticeably slow
responding but there is no indication what is causing the slow down. It
seems most apparent when Firefox is open.

This is still a problem in Jaunty. The SD card reader doesn't work on
my Thinkpad T500.
