Well it happens with another box totally different (lenovo x61t with
intel card, the first was imac with nvidia)
the difference is the version is 0.4.3 in jaunty
i join the strace for the other box

I have installed the old version of libpoppler from here

and everything works now!

nautilus does display a busy cursor while applications are starting so
maybe openoffice is not using startup notification correclty
