I solved it by running alsamixer in a terminal window.
It looks that by default the PCM line of the sound card is muted. You can
change the volume with the arrows, you select the PCM column and use the up

I have Windows XP also, and all cores are recognized all the time.
ubuntu 9.10, as weel as SuSE 11.2milstone8 all variations are possible:
one core, two cores, three cores and, YES even all four.

As a side note, forcefully installing (dpkg -i --force-all) ktimetracker
4.3.1-0ubuntu6 'fixes' the problem. I guess it must be a packaging issue.
I can be bothered to debug this if you need me to.
