The problem is still present in Ubuntu 9.10. In my case the machine has
120MB of memory and 192MB of swap. Swap usage was about 10MB when the
following happened during heavy network IO:

I added export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa to the /etc/default/libvirt-bin and
looks like that the parameter is passed to the KVM, as the KVM does not
use the /dev/snd/* directly. But then audio from KVM works for couple of
seconds only (enough to hear the startup audio from windows, but not
much more than

Usually, the lack of video is do to a lack of codecs. Can these videos
run just fine on vlc or mplayer? If so, then it is most likely codec

Well... Fix Released in this case = Reinstalling with fresh new stable version
solved my problem. I am not getting this error anymore. Before that I was using
KK alpha3 and upgrading it. Since the bug was in alpha stage it went with me
till reinstallation.

The PA is not working well from KVM:
I added export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa to the /etc/default/libvirt-bin and
looks like that the parameter is passed to the KVM, as the KVM does not
use the /dev/snd/* directly. But then audio
error in your program, the gcc crash is fixed in lucid.

Thanks for the workaround. However, it also affects Guake's preferences dialog,
which is placed at the top left corner, too. Any ideas about that?

vlc affects it the same way as gxine does. Videos run fine in gxine and
vlc. They also run fine in totem _if_ I have gxine _or_ vlc running in
the background.
I'm not competent enough to conclude anything about codecs from this
information.

After upgrade to Karmic, I can no longer shutdown or restart from the

thanks for the suggestions, but it did not help
i tried configuring load-module module-alsa-sink control=PCM but it
didn't help. the sound became all shuttery and weird and there is now no
control bar for subwoofer at all. every other control disappeared and
there is only left/right
