I can confirm that the fix helped me. I got segmentation fault before fix
(there were message such as (WW) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file
descriptor in log) and I was able to start X windows in low resolution only.
I'm using Mobility Radeon HD 3400 and radeon driver.

The thing that's weird is that, for me, the signal strength seems fine.
It's consistently in the -70 to -60dBm range (40-50/70 in link quality).
But yeah, it seems that the Intel driver is quite poor. Infact, I would
almost say that I've had better luck with ndiswrapper. I will say that
I am not sure the importance should be 'wishlist'. 0.9.5 is the first
version of konq-kim for KDE 4. So basically we can say that currently
the package is broken.
