Unfortunately there is no jack sensing in Linux the way the optical port
is enabled in OS X or similar. What you have to do is go into a
terminal, and run alsamixer. In alsamixer, you will find a control
labeled IEC958, and it will be muted. To move through the controls, use
the left and right
I tried the fix in comment #8 and the system (Lenovo W500 running Lucid)
seemed to hang after the Ubuntu splash and before the login screen.
Rebooting to low graphics mode and reinstalling the ATI proprietary
driver fixed the hand and my window performance has improved
dramatically.

This bug has been driving me up the wall. If it doesn't get fixed, I'm

Unfortunately, according to at least one commenter on ubuntuforums, the
bug is also present in evolution 2.30, which means there's no quick fix
way out of this one.

1.) Gwibber is supposed to be either closed, or open/visible? Because that's
not the case for me. If I close it with the X instead of with Gwibber Quit,
it stays open in the background with no tray icon or anything.

After upgrading to Lucid, video performance was noticeably slower (for
example, when paging up and down in Firefox when viewing slashdot.org,
