Just to add my two cents: although this has been already mentioned in
comment 83 I'd like to add that to mute the "PC Beep", just select it
with the arrow keys and press 'm'. Simply setting the volume bars to 0
is *not* enough! This completely solved the issue for me in Lucid on a
Dell XPS M1530. (

I have found this by accident. I'm waiting for this for a long time, but
it still doesn't finish my waiting. I own two old Memory Sticks - 16 and
128MB. Yes you have written something about core and 128MB cards,
actually I don't understood that. I use standard Ubuntu 10.04 with its'
latest
I have tested this on my up-to-date Karmic and the problem no longer
occurs. Mute and unmute behave as I would expect. I'll test Lucid and
Maverick and report my findings.

Thanks a lot for confirming that the language pack in lucid-proposed
fixed this.
That language pack was not uploaded to lucid-updates because there was
no feedback from the Norwegian team on the call for testing [1].
