It seems that even a slow USB drive causes dpkg to hang. I was copying
about 4 Gb of data to a slow (but otherwise intact) USB drive, and dpkg
hung until cp finished. I'm guessing the same could happen for a slow
NFS mount etc. This is not a good situation.

The issue in the gnome bug has been fixed (dragging text now creates a
file at the cursor position). The bug still manifests itself in other
drag and drop actions such the file-roller extraction mentioned above or
when dragging a download link onto the desktop.

In Maverick Release Candidate, Ubiquity doesn't suggest anymore to
install Ubuntu on available unallocated free space. Which is rather
annoying, because that puts an end to easy clean upgrades or
