I noticed that during the slow scrolling the LaTeX structure tree
flickers. It looks like it's being updated way too often like once for
each single scroll step.

In current maverick, I keep getting a message in the notification area
saying update information is outdated. This should not show up because
I update every day in the terminal. One reason could be that I have
automatic updates switched off

I've tried rhythmbox from your ppa and the problem is still not solved.
Browsing the iPod with Nautilus displays the .mp3 extension, however
these are not copied onto the local drive.
I do not have the lame decoder package installed.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this... Wherever the 'feature'
originates, I have to reiterate that of the 3 gui volume control apps I
have installed by default, Sound Properties, Gnome-volume-control
applet and Sound Indicator, Sound indicator is the only one that doesn't
follow along.

phone gets a connection just fine (with auto download of certificates and all
whistles)!

Although I didn't deactivate any extensions, I couldn't reproduce the issue.
I'v cleaned the cache from FF closed it and even rebooted the machine.
The issue seems gone for good.

To get an idea of whether this is a problem in gdm or xfce I thought I'd try a
vanilla Ubuntu (ie Gnome) live cd installation. Alas, after a couple of splash
screens, the computer reboots before getting to the installation screen. Looks
like I'll be stuck in Lucid for a while.
