Please use the real bug report for the SRU request (bug 654397)
instead of opening separate SRU bugs, please see SRU policy.
Also, this is a new feature, not really a bug? If it is a regression,
please point that out in the other bug, and upload. Thanks!

I can confirm that python can't open the port and that disabling carrier
detect allows python to open the port. However, gpsbabel still has
problems:
gpsbabel -w -i garmin -f /dev/ttyUSB0 -x track,start=2010112001 -o gpx -F
/home/ian/Private/Dropbox/gps_tracks/test_waypoints.gpx

just get them uploaded, so that they are ready for review/accepting.
This looks fine, please upload.

I followed the source-building and editing steps in #95 JMason wrote on
2010-10-23 and I finally have an Xorg that doesn't crash.
Linux ian 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010

Description:Ubuntu
Alberto's ppa package worked well even on my vintage Geforce2 MX/MX 400 card.
How do we now get a version into the offical package repositories?
Just one remark to Alberto's package contents:
I think the 3 patches in the debian/dkms/patches directory should be removed,
because as far as I can
Fix works as expected, thanks!

Given that karmic is already quite old and we have two newer stable
releases where this is fixed, I doubt it is too useful to fix this in
karmic now. However, if you really want to spend the effort, please
upload.

AVI open: avilib - Not an AVI file when avimerge mp3 file into avi/xvid
This is back in the 2.6.37-rc series kernels ( tried natty
2.6.37-5-generic ) and vanila-git pull of 2.6.37-rc2.
Issue starts causing degredation of entire system once it occurs,
certainly on my machine appears to be related to the nvidia graphics
card HDMI output.
Will post to nvidia bugs.
