I have a number of logs of this, symptoms as described above - seemingly
random crashes; I also had the same problem with the Sun JVM, I have
some error logs from that too if it would be of any help.

I think I've solved the problems on my machine. Shat seems to have
solved the problem was to add noacpi and noapm to Grub.
I also ended up upgrading to a 64-bit Maverick and the 260.19.29 driver
from the x-swat repository along the way...

xserver:

The one remaining patch, master_device.patch, is present in the xserver
git tree, but not in natty's xserver. I'll go ahead and backport that,
