Actually, you have to switch to TTY0 :
- type ctrl + left-alt + F1
- log in as the user who logged in under X
- ps aux | grep nautilus then kill -9 [nautilus process]
It works from a default Ubuntu installation unless you disabled the TTY
text consoles.

I can confirm that this bug is fixed at least as of 1.7.3.5, maybe

Given the fact that the mute key works good without thinkpad-acpi, it
could be interesting to investigate the sound configuration in detail:
Please download alsa-info.sh from http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh.
Execute it with and without thinkpad-acpi loaded, after a while, the result
